Lolita and Marshall had fallen asleep on the couch. They had been watching The Simpson's earlier but they had gotten washed over with a case of the snoozies. They awoke when they heard a key in the door and then a familiar, ding ding. They untangled themselves from each other and grinned.
"Mommy when is daddy coming back?" They heard Hailie inquire from the front of the house.
"I think tonight baby." Kim said and they could hear them coming closer.
"Are you sure?" Alaina asked and Marshall and Lolita picked up the gifts.
"Yeah." Kim said and came around the corner. Marshall laid eyes on his kids.
"Hey y'all." Marshall said and his babies screamed and ran and jumped in his arms causing him to drop the gift basket. Lolita stood in the corner waiting for the girls to notice her too and when Hailie caught a glimpse of her, she grinned.
"Daddy, Lo Lo is here." Hailie said quietly and then giggled. Kim stood awkwardly in front of the wall and had her hand on her growing belly. Marshall put the kids down and they hugged Lolita.
"Alright go hug your mommy." Lolita said and they went.
Marshall picked the gift basket back up. They passed them to the kids and then Marshall walked over to Kim.
"Hey."
"Can we talk, Marshall?" Kim asked and he nodded. They walked out the patio and sat on the furniture by the door, it was freezing but if things got heated they didn't want the kids to see it.
"How's everything going with your baby?" Marshall asked and sat back in the chair looking at the sky.
"Everything is good, it's a beautiful baby girl." Kim said with the smallest amount of regret.
"Look, Marshall, I haven't been the greatest anything to you or our kids. I haven't been the greatest mom, the greatest wife, the greatest friend. I just want us to get along for our kids. I'm sorry for everything I've done." Her voice cracked and tears fell out of her eyes.
"Kim, I have to tell you the truth before anyone else. I love you... always. I'm not in love with you any more but I do love you. I want to get along but I feel like what I'm going to tell you... it's not gonna be received well, it's gonna be made to look like something it's not."
"Marshall, spit it out." Kim said and rubbed her belly.
"Lolita's pregnant." He said and looked at her. Kim could feel her heart shatter and tears form in her eyes.
"We don't like know how far along she is yet but we know she's pregnant. I didn't do it out of spite for you or her ex. I didn't do it with the intent to have a baby with her. We just...I love that girl and this is the timing that God has given us. I'm really sorry, Kim." He said and she looked at him. Her face red and tears streamed down her face.
"I don't know what I expected, Marshall. This is what you want?" She asked and he nodded.
"This is who I want." He said and Kim stood up.
"I have a doctors appointment to get to, I figured I should just bring the kids just in case you where here or not."
"Kim-" She walked back into the house and started walking towards the front door. Marshall sat in the chair frozen in thought and Lolita just looked at the kids in shock. Marshall finally got up and ran to the front door, catching Kim right as she started the car.
"Kim, can we all have dinner together and talk about this?"
"You and your baby mother? No."
"Kim, just dinner, last you ever have to hear about it." Marshall said and Kim shook with fury.
"Fine now leave me alone." She said and Marshall nodded before walking back into the house.
Lolita was waiting by the front door and she sighed.
"Marshall, what was that about?"
"She's mad...cause the baby."
"Our baby?"
"Yes."
"Why did you tell her?" Lo asked and they sat on the steps.
"She told me when she was pregnant."
"Under false pretenses that the baby was yours, she did."
"Lo, don't be like that."
"Marshall, she is just as toxic to you as Don was to me. You aren't seeing it." Lo said and she stood up and walked upstairs to the room. Marshall sighed.
"Why am I never good enough?" He asked under his breath and he followed her up.
"Lo, I'm not doing this right now." He stated and she looked at him and shook her head.
"So why did you come up?" Lo asked and sat on the bed.
"Cause I wanted to check on you."
"I'm going back home, Marshall." Lo said.
"Why?"
"Cause I don't think coming here while your kids were here was a good idea. I think we should just build up to where we were before."
"Lo, no don't go."
"Why?"
"Because I only want you and the girls missed you. You should stay." He said and wrapped his arms around her.
"I don't think you understand...that what you're doin' is not so cool. You think it's funny to mess with my mind, don't you?"
"Lo no, I just love you and I want what's best. This weather and our baby in your stomach... it's not the best."
"You know I love you so you play with me." She said bluntly and Marshall shook his head.
"Lo, please."
"Just leave me alone for now please." She said and he looked at her.
"Fine." He said and slammed the door. He rushed down the stairs and sat with his girls. It reminded him of what happened the first time she left.
October 18, 1994
Lolita and Marshall sat across from each other at Gilbert's. They were off of work and she had pulled him aside earlier and told him they needed to talk.
"How you doing?" He asked and he shook his head feeling the truth about to explode out of his best friend.
"I'm fine, Marshall." She said and he sat in shock of her tone.
"I've got lots of questions." She said bluntly and he looked at her and felt himself getting defensive.
"Like what?"
"Why am I wasting my time trying to get you to love me still. Just cause me and you are friends, you've been fucking with me still. You're with her but you're trying to finesse me. But I won't waste my time tryin' to figure out why you playing games, what's this all about? What's the problem? "
"You and I don't mesh well together Lo, I was trying to protect us not hurt us. I believe that one day I'll get it together and then me and you can be how we were supposed to-"
"Marshall, I don't believe in magic, ghosts, a god, an angel, or that you're my soul mate... I used to for all of it. But I believe that now I'm just settling."
"Lo, you can't believe that. You can't."
"I don't think you understand, let me ask you something...do you think I'm pretty or don't you?"
"Of course I think you are, you're beautiful Lo."
"Do you want to get with me or not?" Lo asked and crossed her arms, sitting quietly.
"As of right now... no. I'm not going to force myself to be with you to keep you around me Lolita, I won't do it. Not for you, not for Kim."
"Well based off what I can see, I'm holding you back."
"Lolita, what?" Marshall asked and just frowned.
"It ain't the time, for you to walk, if I won't let go." She said and he knew he had misspoken but he also knew he couldn't fix it, "I can tell, this ain't what you want but it's like you can't let it show."
"Lo, no, I didn-"
"Marshall, I've tried again and again to give you all of me, but you deny it."
"Lolita, I don't want you to not be in my life anymore because of her and me being together."
"I chose you, 'cause you're all I need and you chose your girl, but she ain't me. Don't call my phone, acting like you care I done made my move, I know life ain't fair." She said standing up and Marshall grabbed her hand.
"Lolita, please, I-"
"I don't want to have to fight for you, this ain't working anymore. I'm sorry." Lo said and she placed her coat on and walked out.
Present
Marshall stood up and walked back up to his room. Lolita sat on the edge away from the door crying.
"Lolita, I'm not letting you leave me again." Marshall said and wrapped his arms around her, wiping her tears quickly.
"I've been thinking about the first time I left, I always leave. I remember the dates too." She said.
"I do too. There was the one after my birthday in '95, June 15 '99, March 2000. Now you're having my baby."
"Life is funny that way." She said and he placed his hand on her tummy.
"I really love you, Lo."
"I love you too, Marshall." She sniffled.
"I thought you were gonna leave me again." He said his head on her chest.
"I thought about it." She said and rubbed the hair on his head.
"You ready to go downstairs?" He asked and she nodded.
8:30 PM
Lolita and Hailie sat on the kitchen counter and watched Marshall and Alaina start on making on brownies.
"Hai Hai what's your favorite part of school?"
"When daddy comes to pick me up from it." She said and grinned.
"I love it when your daddy used to come pick me up from work."
"Lo, do you work?" Hailie asked.
"Yes and no, I'm at school a lot though." She said and smirked. Hailie wrapped her arms around Lolita and smiled.
Two hours later
The girls had gone to bed and Marshall and Lolita were laying on the couch cuddling quietly. As they laid there he was just happy that she didn't leave again. He feared she was never gonna come back if she did leave. They had scheduled the doctors appointment for the next day and were finding excitement in the future.
