Marshall walked to baggage claim and watched as the machine made the luggage circle around and spit more out. He grabbed his and walked out to see a guy with a sign with his name on it.
"Mr. Mathers, right?" He asked and Marshall nodded. He opened the car door for him and Marshall got in. The guy walked to the other side of the car and got in.
"Okay, Mr. Ma-"
"You can call me Marshall." He requested and the guy smiled.
"Okay, Marshall. My name is Fabien, I'm supposed to drop you to your hotel. It's nine here and so I'll be at the hotel around six in the morning to come pick you up." Fabien said and Marshall nodded.
"Is there a phone in the room." He asked and Fabien looked back briefly and nodded.
"Yeah. Girl back home?" Fabien asked and Marshall chuckled.
"Yes, a daughter, a baby momma, and a girlfriend." He said and Fabien laughed.
"Marshall, believe it or not I have the same situation. My baby momma only lets me talk to our son if I talk to her first. My girlfriend gets mad but I tell her this is what I gotta do." He said and Marshall nodded.
"My girl, Lo, she's amazing and adaptable. She does everything for me and my daughter and my niece. She's great. I was asking about the phone so I could call her. She seems down that I'm gone and so I want her to hear me before I get the money to fly her out or to fly home to see her." Marshall said and Fabien nodded.
"She sounds like a great gal." The men said no more as Fabien drove to the hotel. When they arrived he grabbed Marshall's bag and passed it to him. He told him his room number and left.
Marshall walked through the hallways to his room. As he unlocked the door, he felt a burst of cool air hit him. He put his bags down and walked over to the bed. He laid down and grabbed the phone. Picking it up he dialed out and listened to the ringing, right before it was going to stop he heard it pick up.
He could hear her shifting around and he could tell she had been sleep.
"Hi baby." She said, her voice groggy filled with sleep.
"Hey, did I wake you?" He asked and she chuckled.
"No." She said honestly. She couldn't sleep, she just kept thinking about him, she was tired though.
"I just got to my room, I'm nervous." He said and he listened to her breathing.
"You know you're gonna be incredible. Just think about Hailie and what she would say if she saw her daddy achieving his dreams." Lolita said and he laughed softly.
"This is why I love you with all my heart, you know how to respond perfectly."
"You know you're the most important thing to me." She says looking at the clock. She imagines a sea of good luck raining down on Marshall and hopes that Kim won't be his tsunami of misfortune.
She listens as he talks about all the plans he has for them and the plans he has for her in particular.
"I want you to be my wife one day. I know you'll stand by me." He said and she laughed.
"I always come back." She said and sighed.
"I'm sorry for what I've done in the past. I can't even say sorry enough. I deserted you and you deserved better but never really looked for it." He said and she looked around her room and could picture what he was doing. He was probably laying in the bed on his stomach with his head toward the window and the phone on his free ear.
In his mind, he imagined that she was there with him and she would be smirking as he told her everything.
"It's not okay, but I forgave you the day I saw you in the bar. Now look at us. I have a nice place with my roommates and you have your place here. I get along with Kim and your baby. It could be worse but it hasn't yet." She said and Marshall nodded.
"I'm proud to call you my girl. I'll scream it from the rooftops if I have to...the neighbors probably won't like me too much after that but whatever." He said and she giggled. Her cheeks were red from how hard she had been smiling the whole time. Before his phone call she felt like a ghost of who she was, like everything was in slow motion and she was just trying to break free.
Marshall checked the time and sighed.
"I need to get some sleep, Baby. I'll call you afterwards." He said and she sighed.
"Alright." She said and they hung up.
6 Months Later
August 19, 1998
Lolita sat on her bed as Jenny and Kalila sat on the floor looking at her.
"So tomorrow is my birthday and Marshall is flying back tonight."
"Who's at the apartment?" Jenny asked and Lolita sighed trying to hold back the tears.
"Kim."
"Why?" Jenny asked saying a little loud causing the baby to jump.
"She got evicted from her place so he told her to go to his place with Alaina and Hailie."
"How do you feel about that?" She asked and Lo sighed.
"I don't know how I feel. I get she needs somewhere to stay but I don't know if her being at his place is a good idea. Like he flew her and the baby out first too and he said they didn't do anything other than take Hailie to Chuck E. Cheese but I don't believe that. You don't get in a room with your baby momma and not take advantage of the situation. Lord knows what he was thinking."
"Don't be a dumb bitch, Eric tried this shit on me and then he got me pregnant and left with his first baby momma and this is why we don't except nothing less than the truth."
"I don't know what to think."
"Wait till after your birthday, then on like the 21, 22 be like bitch wassup." She said and Lolita laughed.
"Alright."
"Now run me through your birthday plans." Jenny demanded as Kalila crawled around the room.
"I'm throwing a party at the club me and Marshall met at and I might let him in but I don't know yet. Then after the party I'm taking pictures to get developed, then I'm coming home." She said and Jenny nodded.
"I gotta get a babysitter. I won't be that mom in the club turning up with a baby on my belly. No ma'am." She said and the girls laughed. They heard the doorbell ringing and Lolita stood up. She moved towards the door and looked through the peep hole. She could see Marshall standing there. He was wiping his palms on his pants and he had flowers in his arms along with a card. She opened the door and flew into his arms. He flew her out two months ago but she couldn't stay long so they went to the Hollywood sign and to hotspots in the city. For her last day he took her to the beach and they sat at a bonfire.
She felt the tears on her face fall onto his shirt and she gasped for air. He lifted her head up and placed a kiss on her lips.
She grinned before letting him wipe her tears away.
"Hi, Baby." He said and laughed.
"Hi." She said and he picked her up walking to the apartment.
"Marshall, hey." Jenny said and Kalila followed her mommy before sitting on the floor and playing with her toys.
"Hey Jenny." He said and Jenny hugged him from the side. With Lo in his arms he bent down and high-fived the baby. They all smiled and Marshall walked Lolita into her room.
"Where's Rebecca and Tatiana?" Marshall asked and Lo smiled.
"Tatiana is in the process of moving out and Rebecca is at work."
"Why's Tatiana leaving?" He asked and Lo sighed.
"She's getting married and so she's moving in with him before the wedding. We're all still cool with her. We're gonna be bridesmaids." She said and Marshall chuckled.
"So that's how the deal works, get married and you can leave?"
"Not really. She still has to pay her part of the rent until October then Jenny and me are gonna get one of the cheaper apartments that are here and Rebecca's moving to North Carolina. For what, I don't know." He planted a kiss on her lips and she laughed. She kissed him again and moved her hand down his jaw. He swallowed and looked at her. She could tell something was on his mind but she didn't have time to ask. They fell asleep in the embrace and when she awoke he was gone. She looked at the table and saw the flowers in a vase and the card next to it. She grabbed it and wiped the sleep out her eyes sighing and then opened it.

She grinned and she heard a knock on her door.
"Come in." She watched as the door moved and Jenny walked in.
"Happy Birthday." She said and hugged Lolita.
"Do you know when he left?" Lo asked and Jenny nodded.
"Yeah, I came in here and y'all were all cuddled up and we were talking and then he got a call. He picked it up and I could hear this girl yelling at him and then he started pulling his hoodie on and pulled out the card and left it there. He left he came back with the flowers and then he left again like ten minutes ago. She smiled and nodded looking back at the flowers.Authors Note:
