An Hour Later
When Lolita returned Marshall was sitting in a chair and he was humming a song and dancing.
"Marshall, are you ready?" She questioned, her hair was down and straight. She was wearing a white puffy coat to prevent the cold from getting to her. Under the coat she was wearing a black tee shirt and sweats with some beat up nikes.
"Yeah I'm ready." they walked out to her car and he got in the passenger seat.
"So, what are you thinking?" She asked and he looked over.
"I'm so happy I have you to support me." He said, "Four months ago we weren't even speaking and now you've encouraged me more than she ever would in a lifetime."
"Marshall, I have always been on limited time with you. I spent a lot of my teenage years chasing after you and letting you hurt me but, when life is good it is great and I wouldn't want to waste it with anyone else but you." She said and he smiled.
"Why do you feel that way?" He asked.
"Every time Kim wanted you back, you went. Back then you didn't have a legitimate excuse. Now if you leave me, you're gonna say something like I want my family back. I'm not gonna avoid you for years if it happens again, I'm just not gonna stay in Michigan to support y'all's off and ons. It's not about me right now, it's about supporting your family."
"Lolita, you are my family. I'll make sure I have you set up with the finest when I make it." He said.
"Marshall, the apartment I got, I got that with my girls. I never needed you if I wanted something. I worked for it. I'm in my senior year of college, I have a very small amount I have to pay, then I'm gonna go on and do what I love. I just need you as a person, as a lover, as a friend. I don't need you to have sex with me to prove that you love me." She said and made a turn. He saw a whole bunch of lights and realized that she had brought him to the winter carnival.
"Oh wow." He said and she looked at him.
"You ready?" She asked taking off the coat and throwing on a lighter jacket.
"Yeah." He said watching her gently place the beanie on top of her head. They got out the car and started walking around.
"Can we go on the ferris wheel?" She asked and he nodded. He grabbed her hand and they walked to the line.
"Do you remember when I told you I got Kim pregnant?" He asked and she nodded.
"How did you feel?" He asked wrapping her in his arms.
"Alone, like I did when I left our high school. I wanted to run away, you were my first love and you got your first love pregnant- but you wouldn't- won't even have sex with me. I thought that's what I needed to prove that I was yours and you were mine but it never happened. So I'm 22 almost 23 and I'm still waiting on you, still a virgin, still in love with you." She said quietly. Marshall looked around briefly and thought about what he could do to make her feel like she was wanted, she was all he ever wanted in the moment as well but he couldn't seem to deliver. It seemed like every time they both wanted to an important call or Kim would come in between and he couldn't help but answer.
"Are your roommates working tonight?" He asked and she nodded.
"Jenny is gonna drop Kalila off with her father and then go to work, Rebecca is out of town, Tatiana is visiting her boyfriend in D.C. It's just me tonight." She said and Marshall nodded.
"Let's hang out then." He said and she grinned.
"Okay."
Later That Night
Marshall and Lolita walked up the three floors into the apartment. She unlocked the door and stepped in. Turning his head he looked at her and she smiled. Turning on the hallway lights they moved through and past the kitchen. She placed kisses all on his face and they tripped over the couch. He started tugging at her shirt and then he saw her eyes widen. In that moment he could feel cold metal against his scalp.
"All's I want is ya money, gold, real jewelry." The man said and Lolita slid back off the couch. Marshall sat down and closed his eyes. He scooted over to Lolita and wrapped her arms around him. She knew she didn't have any money but all her roommates had cash hidden throughout the house. Jenny kept hers in between the playpen mat and her dresser, Tatiana put hers in the pockets of all her jackets, and Rebecca kept hers under the sink. Lolita never made enough money to save, all she had was five dollars in her pocket. Marshall only had a dollar in his pocket. The robber was gone within minutes. He went through all the rooms and came out with a bag of jewelry.
"If you call the police, if you called the police, if you ID me, I'll come back and kill you both." The man said and walked out. For the first time in fifteen minutes she took a deep breath. Lolita stood up and walked to the back room. She looked around and all over and under the beds, he hadn't gotten the jewelry from their room. Marshall looked at her and stood up. He was so used to it that all he wanted to do was lay down and watch football. Nothing could really dampen his mood. He still had his dollar and he wasn't the one that got robbed today-Lo's roomies were.
"Hey, Jenny." Lolita said.
"Hey, I'm on break what's up." She asked.
"So we just got robbed. He held a gun to Marshall's head and he pointed it in my face."
"Did you see what he took?" Jenny asked.
"Yeah, he took a bunch from your room and Rebecca's, no cash though."
"Alright. Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'm just used to it." Lo said and heard Jenny breathe.
"Alright, I'll be home at two." Jenny said hanging up. After getting through to all the girls, she sat down on the couch next to Marshall and he rubbed her leg. He wrapped her in his arms and kissed her forehead.
"Why does something always happen when we try?" She asked.
"We can try again baby, I have a few days before I go out there." He said and she sighed. She stood up and walked to her room. She started taking pictures of the rooms and then she straightened up. She took her clothes off until she was in her underwear. She laid down on her bed, the cold sheets sending chills down her back.
Marshall stood up and walked to the back, he looked at her and saw tears pouring down her face. He took off his jacket and shoes and crawled into bed with her. He enveloped her into his arms and she shook with pain and fury.
"Kiss me, please." She said and he did. After a few more, she felt his hands slipping down to her leg and she felt the excitement creep up to her heart and out her lips. She could feel him moving in and out of her, his fingers caressing the curves of all of her. She bent her head back and then heard a door open. She moved his hand and sat up. He looked at her confusion spread on his face and she sighed.
"I think one of them is here." She said and she stood up grabbing her robe. She walked out into the living room and Marshall followed her.
"Lo, it's me Rebecca."
"Hey Rebecca." Lo said and Marshall smiled at her.
"Hey Lo and Marshall. Y'all okay?" She asked.
"Yeah." They said. Lolita walked back into her room with Marshall and he looked at her.
"Lo, I'm gonna go home- do you want to come with?" He asked and she looked at him enamored. He smirked at her and she laughed.
"Yeah." She grabbed a bag and then they walked downstairs. The adrenaline had hit her so bad she didn't realize she was still in her robe until she was halfway down the stairs. Marshall carried her down the rest of the steps and to the car.
She shuddered as she sat in the passenger seat, she felt her eyes flutter as he started the drive.
Marshall's Apartment
They walked into the apartment. It was a small, dingy spot but it also had a cozy vibe to it. Marshall turned on the space heater and walked her into his room.
"Let me get a tour of the place." She said putting her bag down. He chuckled and grabbed her hand.
"Welcome to the Fire Marshall's Pad." He said and she giggled.
"This off to your left is my living, dining, man cave room." He grabbed her hand and untied her robe.
"No robes allowed in this sector of me casa, my lady." He said and she kissed him quickly before allowing him to continue. She laughed and he couldn't help but admire her before taking her through the place.
"Here's my kitchen, I haven't had a home cooked meal since Kim left me- not like she cooked that well anyways." He said lightening up the mention of his ex-girlfriend's name. Leading her to the bedroom, he opened the door. A bed that had been messily bed before leaving that morning stood. He had two wooden tables as stand ins for night stands. On the night stands were a lamp and some papers around it, pens on top of those papers. As she looked around, she smiled again. She could smell him all throughout. He lead her through to the bathroom and showed her how the faucets worked.
"Do you have the schedule for Gilbert's?" She asked.
"No, but you told me the days you have to work." She walked to his calendar and saw she didn't have to go in until the afternoon. She grabbed Marshall by his shirt and he picked her up.
"I want you." She said and he kissed her.
"I want you too." He laid her on the bed and she felt her eyes shut quickly. She thought quickly about all the interruptions and she got scared, that maybe that it wasn't meant to be. She pulled him closer and he kissed her.
"Can I?" He asked and she nodded.
"Yes." She said and felt all of their clothes come off. He brushed lightly across her arms and she got goosebumps. Even as he entered she felt the pain but she also felt all the pleasure. She kept kissing him as tenderly as possible. Her smile lit up his world in the moment, he just wanted the warmth of another woman's body and he found that in Lolita. She wrapped her legs around his back only letting go for him to release. When they finished, he grabbed a towel for both of them to get cleaned off.
"I love you." He said as he wiped away the mess they had created.
"I love you too." She said and all her anxieties about the night had disappeared. She rolled over in the nude and waited for him to come back. When he did he laid behind her and wrapped her within his arms. She could feel his heartbeat on her shoulder just as she could feel the tears dropping from his face as she fell asleep.
5 AM
Marshall was awaken by a loud knock on the door. He looked over to see that Lolita was still there, sleeping as peacefully as she had been right after they started cuddling. He unraveled her from his arm and walked to the door. He pulled on some shorts on the way there and picked up Lo's robe, tossing it on the couch.
He checked the peep hole just to see Deshaun standing there with Von. He sighed and then they knocked harder. He grabbed Lo's robe again and placed it on the bed right next to her. He then ran back to the door and opened it.
"Any reason your knocking on my god damn door at five in the morning?" Marshall asked slightly annoyed with his best friends.
"Yeah, we went to see the Bass Brothers and they tell us that Dr. Fucking Dre called you and set a meeting with you."
"Yeah man, what about us?" Von asked and Marshall sighed.
"I told you'll I'd come back for y'all. I can't come back for y'all if I don't have nothing."
"That's bullshit, Dre is gonna sign you and you're gonna forget about us." Deshaun said. Just as Marshall was going to say something they all heard a small voice start to speak.
"Proof-Von, this couldn't have waited a few hours?" She questioned slightly annoyed.
"No, this motherfucka here, he made a promise and part of the deal was letting your people know when something like this was gonna happen."
"Fuck y'all man, y'all come in my place hooting and hollering when y'all done fucking know. I will come back for y'all asses but I'm out the group. I'm done." Marshall said and walked to the door. He opened it and Deshaun started walking out and then he stopped.
"Don't leave us here to die, nigga." He said and they walked out. Marshall closed and the door and she sighed. She looked him in the face and was searching for any type of regret but found none.
"Marshall."
"I don't want to talk about it." He said and walked into the bathroom slamming the door behind him. She laid down on the bed and looked at the ceiling. She examined every little crack and water damaged spot. After fifteen minutes she stood up and went to the door.
"Marshall, let me in please."
On the opposite side of the door, Marshall was on the floor, tears collapsing down his face. Snot dripping from his nose and hurt ripping down his heart. He didn't want to hurt her feelings but he didn't want her to see him like that.
"Marshall, I'm not going to leave you." She said and he moved from the front of the door and opened it. She slipped in and kissed his cheek. She sat on the floor next to him and looked at him.
"You don't need to listen to them. You've been a great friend from the start. Don't let them change that." She said and he nodded.
"Those are my friends. They don't believe that I'm gonna come back for them." He said wiping away the tears.
"Show them that you will." She said and kissed him tenderly.
"Alright." He said and she rubbed his leg.
"I love you." She said and he nodded, focused on getting the tears to disappear.
