Being the only girl in the Glade had its perks, but it also had it's downside. It had been a few months since you came up in the box, but Alby just now decided it was time to figure out which job you should have.
There was so much hysteria when you came up in the box, because you were the first ever girl to arrive. It took a few months for everything to settle down, and now, everyone treats you like you're one of them.
You were destined to be a runner. You had convinced Alby to let you try for a runner, so he decided that you could run with Minho for a few days.
On the first day, you were already running ahead of Minho. Minho had to make you slow down a few times for him to catch up. After the daily run, Minho took you to the Mapping Hut, and taught you how to sketch out a map of the paths you had ran. It only took you one lesson from him to figure it out. You were a quick learner.
On the second day, you ran at the same pace as Minho, carrying on a conversation with him. When you had sat down for lunch, Minho asked you the question he had kept to himself.
"What made you want to be a runner?"
"I don't know. I mean, I just love the thrill of the adrenaline rushing through me. The cool breeze surrounding me. The burn in my legs after running for so long. I just love it. I love running. And I also want to help as much as I can in trying to find a way for us to escape."
On the third day, you had decided to go see Alby after dinner, and ask him about what decision he was leaning towards. You quickly finished your dinner and headed to the Homestead, only to see Minho talking to Alby.
They hadn't noticed you yet, so you quickly ducked out of view and started eavesdropping in on their conversation.
"So, you don't think that Y/N has what it takes to be a runner?" Alby spoke, hands on his hips and staring at Minho, waiting for his reply.
"She doesn't. She can barely keep up with my pace, she has to stop for so many breaks, she gets lost easily, and she can't sketch out a map. There's no way she can be a runner. It's not the right job for her." Minho spoke, lies rolling off his tongue. It took all your might to not stand up and start going off on Minho. Either he was blind every time you ran, or he had a good reason for lying to Alby, keeping you from getting the job of a runner.
"Thank you for your opinion, Minho. I think I'll put her with Clint and Jeff. She's medjack material." Minho and Alby parted ways, and that's when you blew up, storming out of the Homestead and going after Minho.
"What the hell was that, Minho?! Lying to Alby about my running? You and I know very well that I can keep up with your pace and that I don't take a single break, other than the lunch break. So you want to explain why the hell you lied? Why you're trying to sabotage my chances of being a runner?"
"Y/N, I can explain!" Minho spoke, after recomposing himself when he was shocked to see you and to hear what came out of your mouth.
"Please do," you said, crossing your arms and keeping a stern look on your face.
"I lied to Alby, because I know that Runner is the most dangerous job in the Glade. It's too dangerous for you, Y/N. Yes, you fit all of the qualifications there are to being a runner, but I don't want anything happening to you. We've had Gladers in the past get hurt and even dying because they were runners. Y/N, I don't want you getting hurt or losing you, because I love you!"
You stood there, shocked. You didn't ever think that in a million years, that Minho would admit to him loving you.
"Minho, I-I don't know what to say. If you would've just told me the truth, then we could've figured something out. You didn't have to lie to Alby, just to protect me. I'm aware that I'm the only girl in the Glade, and I should be protected, but you have to realize, I can do good for the Glade and for us. Minho, I want to be a runner, because I want to run with you. I never planned on running by myself. If you could please go back and tell Alby the truth, that would be amazing."
"Alright, I'll go tell Alby. Come with me to find him," he said, taking your hand in his. You two started walking around the Glade, looking for Alby. After a while, you finally laid your eyes on the leader, who was currently fussing at a Glader.
"There he is. Let's go," you said, pointing over to Alby, and dragging Minho along. You reached Alby as soon as he dismissed the other Glader.
"Minho has something he would like to tell you," you said, and Alby converted his attention to Minho.
"I lied to you earlier when I said Y/N wasn't right for running. The truth is, she meets all of the qualifications it takes to be a runner. She's perfect for the job. I just don't want her to get hurt. So, we both decided that if Y/N becomes a runner, then she can run with me. It'll get the job done faster, along with the mapping. She's absolutely perfect for the job."
"Well then. Congratulations, Y/N, you're officially a runner. And for you Minho, I'll do something about the fact you lied to me. Other than that, it's nearly time for bed so, goodnight Y/N and goodnight, Minho." Alby walked away, leaving you and Minho alone.
"Thank you Minho," you said, then getting on your tippy toes to reach his face, and smashing your lips onto his. His hands flew to your waist while yours tangled in his hair.
You pulled apart after a while, smiling like idiots at each other. You got what you wanted. The job you were destined for, and the love of your life.
