10th Encounter: The Angel and Her Scary Tree

Name: Somnium Nemus

First Appearance: The Dreaming Tree

Age: Reallllly old. Centuries ish.

Role in Story: Killer tree that believes itself a god.

Appearance: Large, long branches, wide dome shape

Weapons: None

Powers: It can appear and disappear at will. It can read minds and emotions, and even confuse the senses: fogging up memories so that people don't remember it, or set tiny suggestions in their heads to lure them to places. It consumes the spirit energy of its victims to bolster its powers by luring them into falling asleep under its branches, and then using vivid dreams to seduce them until they let their guard down entirely. The end result is death.

Background: Once just a very empathic tree that wanted to communicate with human beings by granting them dreams that fulfilled their desires, it began to be worshiped and a temple was built around it. It saw all the bad emotions inside people as well as the good, became full of itself, and elevated itself to judge, jury, and executioner. Its former followers tried to destroy it, but it freed itself from the confines of mortality and soil with the energy it had already consumed and escaped. It has gathered many new powers and tricks over the centuries that is has fed.

Personality: Proud. It has no voice, though sometimes it will move its leaves or limbs. For the most part, it tries to appear as a regular tree. It believes itself above humans (on par with a god) and deserving of judging them. It only attacks those who it finds are guilty of something terrible when reading their minds/emotions. (Feeling guilty doesn't mean the person is ACTUALLY guilty of something, however.)

Weaknesses: It can't be burned, it can't be cut. Its one weakness is magic specifically focused towards nature, like Fey magic. It also will not disappear/run away if someone is looking at it or its in a public place.

Enemy: Fey. (Beings that hold nature-magic of any sort, really.)

Hobbies: Judging and eating people?

Likes: Being worshiped, consuming energy, winning.

Dislikes: Fey, immortals, people mocking it.

Fun Fact: It seems to have musical inclinations. When people fall into the dreams it creates for them (which always feels like they didn't fall asleep at all and are still sitting under the tree, even while weird things are happening) they often hear flutes and drums.

It'll be fun to use Katie with this one heh, a magical tree is definitely something that would scare the crap out of her. )
