Name: Maize
First Appearance: Six Waking: Book 2 of the Otherworld Trilogy
Age: 20
Role in Story: Antagonist/Antihero, depending upon your perspective
Appearance: Maize is tall and just slightly thinner than what could be considered healthy. He is very pale, often tired-looking with dark circles beneath his eyes, a result of his illness. He keeps is straight, dark hair unkempt and slightly shaggy. His eyes are the most attention-grabbing feature of his, a deep green color that despite his otherwise somewhat sickly appearance remain sharp and fierce. He is generally known to wear casual, nondescript clothing--jeans, sneakers, and hoodies, mainly. Despite his appearance Maize has an aura of power to him; it is easy to tell at a glance that he is not somebody to mess with. Most people instinctively shy away from him without fully knowing why.
Powers: Maize is the sixth Point of the Otherworld's power and controls the soul. He is able to read a person's aura and soul in an instant and know an incredible amount of information about them, including their past, intention, condition, race, abilities, and more. He can take hold of a person's soul and influence their actions through it, sort of like a form of mind control. He can directly attack a soul and cause the person an unimaginable amount of pain, a tactic he often uses as torture to get information. He can remove souls from a body and either bind them to his own soul, essentially absorbing their energy for himself, or keep them intact and at any time summon these souls to act as expendable puppets, generally for combat purposes. So long as the souls remain intact Maize's victim will live, though more as a vegetable than anything.
Maize can also dreamwalk (enter the dreams of others) and travel between Earth and the Otherworld. Both are similar to astral projection in that his physical body is left behind when he does this, usually sleeping. He also has an inherent resistance to other psychic abilities, especially those that influence his memories or thoughts.
Maize's abilities are closely tied to his emotions and the stronger his emotions, the stronger his abilities become. However, should he lose control of his emotions his power would lash out at anything around him, most likely killing or destroying it violently.
Background: Born Ethan Ryker, Maize was chosen at only 2 years old to become the sixth Point and was gifted with his abilities, along with his younger sister Cara, the third Point and the Mind. Until he was 8 he was trained alongside all of the Points by SAM, the Otherworld's master and his beloved teacher, but when she discovered his ability was growing unstable she left him with his parents and took the other Points with her to an unknown location, fearing they would fall under his influence and be harmed. Succumbing to the strain of his power and what could be argued as his own pre-existing mental instability, Maize killed his parents and fled, vowing to find SAM, rescue his sister, and find a way to save his own life.
Personality: Usually quiet unless he has something to say, Maize is incredibly intelligent and cunning and knows it. He can be the smooth, charming, softspoken gentleman or the cold and cruel villain, whatever he needs to be to get what he wants. He reads people like books and cares for nobody but himself and his sister; everybody else are tools in his eyes, or less if he sees no use for them. He has a definite narcissistic side and shows little to no empathy towards others--in short he has some very noticeable psychopathic traits. Maize has no inhibitions when it comes to torture, manipulation, betrayal, or murder if somebody stands in his way, and gaining his trust is a task not to be taken lightly. It isn't even that he dislikes people; he just doesn't care. If he sees no advantage to interacting with someone he generally won't unless they initiate conversation, and that is probably the only time some facets of his real self show through to most people--his uncaring outlook on the future and deadpan humor especially.
