I sat up straight, my back against the wall as I tried to keep my eyes open; the television screen becoming blurrier the more I stare at it. Cassie hasn't arrived yet and it was almost two in the morning, I decided to call her.
“Hello? Cass?” the giggles in the background were confusing because I remember her telling me she was going to a party and I’m surprised that she even picked up at all.
“Yeah… Hello? Who’s this?” A male’s voice came through the line.
“Who’s this?” I waited for him to answer.
“Hello?” It was Cassie’s voice now on the line.
“What time are you coming home?”
“Don’t wait up!” and the line went dead.
As I was about to close my eyes and sleep, there was a loud knock on the door and I didn't know whom I was expecting but I got up anyways and opened the door with no excitement.
“I know I took forever but…” Thomas stood there, suitcase beside him and a familiar blonde stepped on the other side.
“Surprise!”
“Thomas! You weren't supposed to be here for another week!” I gave him a hug before he could put his suitcase down and Cassie sidestepped us.
“I wanted to surprise you…” he smiled nervously and I couldn't help but give him another hug.
“Well, surprised me you did. Come in, make yourself at home.”
“I’m actually going to stay at that motel across the street, I don’t want to inconvenience you guys…”
Cassie and I looked at him, “What makes you think you're inconveniencing us?”
He shrugged his shoulders and smiled again, his hand running through his hair, “is it really alright for me to stay?”
“Of course! Now, put you're bags down and get some sleep, you must be so tired from that flight.”
“I heard Zayn was here… Said he’d stop by.” He avoided my gaze as he set his bags down.
“He left… three days ago… he stopped by” I was beginning to wonder if Cassie had gotten the hint that I’d like to avert that subject as much as possible.
“Oh, cool.”
I couldn’t help but think… “you talk to him?”
Thomas looked at me, eyes steady on my gaze and I could practically hear his saliva sliding down his throat, “uh… yeah,” he tried to clear his throat but it came out like a choking noise.
I was about to drop the subject, not wanting to go into detail of what Zayn and Thomas could possibly talk about but the hesitance behind Thomas’ actions made me realize there’s something he’s not telling me, “and?”
“Bay…” he looks at Cassie, clearly stating in silence that he doesn’t want her around for this part so she leaves, unoffended, “Bay… he just…” his expression was one of a lonely child, a sad lonely child whose lost everything and I didn’t understand what he was trying to tell me.
“He what Thomas?”
I wanted him to spit it out, it was suspenseful and painful watching his expression in the dim lit room, and “he just wants to be updated, is all.” He shrugs his shoulders as if it’s that easy.
