Silence speaks when words can’t
“CASS!” I managed to wipe away the tears before going on the elevator.
“I knew you would change your mind.” Her smile was wide and white and I couldn’t tell her to stop without sounding mean.
“Just…” I grabbed at my hair, tears threatening to spill again, “find me something to wear.”
Cassie made it her mission to go on a scavenger hunt in the closet for an outfit for me to wear. My thoughts were blurry, I wanted to distract myself from today’s events and I couldn’t think of anything better than music and dancing.
“This…” she walks to me, a royal blue dress held in front of her, “this is what you need.”
“A little blue, don’t you think?”
“A little blue, no one can go wrong with the color…except for brown. Brown can fuck Blue up.” I couldn’t help but laugh at Cassie’s ramblings and hold my tongue behind my teeth because, I’d laugh really hard but I don’t want to laugh really hard.
“You think I’ll fit in this?” I held the dress up, it looked two sizes too small but I trusted Cassie’s eye.
The dress was cute, I had to admit; Riley would’ve loved it. It was her favorite color. I inhaled deeply, closing my eyes and trying to stable my breathing again as I looked at myself in the mirror.
“Good! You’re dressed, now… let’s go!”
I turn around and Aria is smiling wide and reaching for my hand, “Cassie is taking me to a party…”
She stopped, her face contorting into an expression of confusion and sadness; “I thought Matt had told you about the Gala.”
“Gala?”
“Yeah… I thought your dad would have told you too. We all got an invitation. Preston’s going and so is your dad… I think.” I look back to the mirror, “and if you’re wondering if you’re dressed for a Gala, yes. Let’s go… please?”
I sighed, turning back to see Aria frowning or pouting and I take her hand after putting my black suede ankle booties on, “Let’s go.”
Cassie gave me a puzzled expression before I explained to her where I was going and she understood since fine I’ll have more drinks for myself but I told her to be careful, I need my roommate for the remainder of the year, I joked.
“I mean it though, be careful.” I looked back at her when I walked through the door.
“Yeah, yeah.” The door was shut with a bit of force but I didn’t think much of it. It was Cassie.
“So,” Aria and I walked arm in arm to the car, “what Gala are we talking about?”
“Oh, just to celebrate success or something, my dad didn’t explain much of it.”
When the driver opens the door for the back seat, Matt’s hair is the first thing I see and my throat is straining itself from choking. His blonde hair is cut neatly a few inches above his eyebrows, finally. I slide in next to him and my breath catches in my throat because I never noticed the way his pupils go from a small little black circle to a wild oval covering the beautiful green color of his eyes.
“Hey” he breathed and I didn’t expect myself to feel my stomach tie itself in knots but yeah, it did that thing where I felt all tingly but I managed a soft “hi.”
The car ride was silent but I could hear our breathing, even the driver’s sharp inhales and groggy exhales caused by smoking for a lifetime. The way the car jumped a little with every little rock that it ran over didn’t help with the comfortable silence. Everything was too comfortable except for the heat in my cheeks and the rumbling in my stomach. I didn’t know how to make the warm feeling I felt in my face subside, I haven’t had any alcohol in my system yet so I didn’t understand why I felt a little intoxicated.
