Jumping the Fence

Y/N's POV

"Zane, what were you thinking?!" I scowl at him harshly. I'm growing more and more upset at Zane's lies the more I think about them. "I tried to help you cover up the relationship, but now you've gone a bit far."
"Y/N, please, you have to understand!" he pleas. I don't want him to be groveling like this, but I was the one who had to see Kawaii~Chan and Zane kiss. Now I wish I hadn't seen.
"What is there to understand?! Stop keeping this a secret for no reason!" I'm on my last nerve, and by the looks of it, so is he. He adjusts his mask, allowing a peek at his clenched teeth and red cheeks. I take a deep breath, huffing an exhale as I fold my arms across my chest.
"You know what..." he rasps, his voice breathy with anger. "I don't know why I thought you could understand what I'm going through! It's not like you've ever felt the pressure of stepping out of line because of someone you love... how do you think everyone is going to react?!" Immediately after he scolds me, his eyes shine with regret when he realizes who he's talking to. I stare at him, looking empty and somewhat defeated. Fighting with him is no use when all the problem is only a lack of self-respect. I allow my arms to fall to my sides, relaxing my shoulders and taking small breaths. Zane's rushing pulse can only be unimaginably fast, especially when I cup my hands on his shoulders. He continues to try and look angry at me, but it's failing miserably, for he only looks terrified at this stage.
"My husband, Zenix, whom of which is someone you now are great friends with, was one of the most feared and disliked people on our street," I begin lecturing calmly. "is the one that I fell in love with. People didn't trust his anger and they looked down upon his past. But I saw more in him. I saw that there are dreams in his heart and there's control in is mind. He knew how to wrap his arms around me and tell me everything was okay. Perfection wasn't a requirement, Zane. He has scars all over, but to me, that only makes him more beautiful."
"How so...?"
"He's won it all and lost it all," I can almost feel Zane's unsteadiness. "Now I know he can get me through it if I ever experience the same." Swallowing some spit that had built up in the corners of my cheeks, I move some hair out of Zane's eye; he doesn't stop me. I'm staring him down, but at the same time, the comfort in my gaze doesn't frighten him. Although, it doesn't put him at ease. "And you know, everyone else saw how beautiful he is too. It took a little adjusting for everybody, especially Sasha, but maybe the adjustment was for the better for her. Don't be afraid of what everyone else will think. You and Kawaii~Chan are definitely an interesting combination, but that just makes you better for each other. No one is not going to accept your love for each other. Stop standing in line and step out a little bit. Jump over the fence while your at it." An amused smile must form on his face, for his cheeks rise and his eyes crinkle at the edges.
"I don't know how to hop a fence."
"Seriously?!" I laugh sarcastically. "It's not that hard." I hear a creaking from behind me and turn to see Zenix standing in the doorway of our house, looking at us with an annoyed expression. Zane fiddles with his thumbs and watches as my husband walks over to us.
"So, Zane, I'd like to meet this... Sprinkles," Zenix curls the cat's name on his tongue, almost spatting it. I stand silently, looking at Zane with anticipation.
"Her name isn't Sprinkles."
"Oh? Well then what is it?" Zenix's tone is stinging in my ears, his expression a mix of anger and sourness. It immediately changes, though, when Zane states,
"Kawaii~Chan."

He jumped the fence.
