~ [Evelyn] ~

Crap. Crap. CRAP.

I ran to the living room, taking gentle steps toward the front door and peeking out the peephole. Distorted in the fisheye glass was the handsome face of one Mason Van der Gelt. I reached for the doorknob, but felt Liam's warm hand resting on mine, stopping me. I looked up at him with questioning eyes.

"We can't let him see us together, Ev," he whispered into my ear, and I almost melted to his warm breath on my neck.

"But we didn't-"

"Look at us," he gestured at his boxers and I looked down at my bra and panty set. We both looked like we had a fun night and it made me feel sick that Mason was just on the other side of this wooden door.

Knock! Knock! Knock, knock, knock!

It was his "shave and a haircut" knock again and it reminded me of last Saturday. I stared blankly at the floor, feeling the warmth of Liam's hand, which was still on mine. After a long moment, I looked through the peephole to see that Mason had left. I shook my hand to loosen Liam's hold on it and turned the knob, poking my head out.

Mason was gone, but as I turned to look at my welcome mat, I noticed a cup of coffee, a pastry bag, and a note written on the back of one of his business cards.

Breakfast for the prettiest girlfriend ever - Mason

I choked as I read the card, thinking to myself as I grabbed the cup of coffee and the pastry bag. I took a sip from the cup and recognized my usual sugar and cream ratio. Mason really is perfect.

I choked on my own guilt as I placed it on the coffee table and turned to Liam, whose brows were furrowed as his gaze was set on me.

"Liam, I-"

"Ev, don't." He cut me off, his eyes hardening.

"But we can't do this, Liam," I told him softly as I looked down. I didn't have the willpower to yell. I just needed to tell him the truth, because we really can't hurt Mason when he was clearly just a boy in love. And with the way things were going between him and I, it was apparent that I may fall for him if I permitted myself.

"I've waited so long, Ev." He rested his hand on the side of my face, tilting it up to meet his eyes, something I was afraid to do. They were dark, intense, almost forlorn as I found my own reflection in them. It's me. He's only ever had me in his eyes and here I was, letting him go like a fool.

Maybe I was a fool, but I won't hurt Mason. I can't.

"We can't do this to Mason," I whispered to him as I felt him inch closer to my lips. Just as he was about to kiss me, I murmured, "And Harper."

Both our eyes shot wide open as we pulled ourselves away. Harper! Harper! HARPER! God, we fvcked up so bad. She was clearly beginning to fall for him. How could I let this happen? Why did I let her go through with her plan in the first place?

"We have to stop this now, Liam. We have to forget that any of this happened. We'll go back to being friends and we'll have to stay that way," my voice shook as I instructed him. He stood there, frozen, staring at me.

"But what if I let you go back to him and you'll stay with him forever? What if this was my only chance to be with you? I don't want to risk losing you forever, Ev. I love you and I'm pretty certain that won't change." His certainty broke my heart ten times over as his eyes filled with hopeless tears.
