~ [Harper] ~
We rushed to the hospital and checked in to visit Liam, who had already been placed in a patient room instead of sitting around in the emergency room. I have never seen Evelyn so freaked out before, but it might have to do with the fact that the last time she spoke to him, they were probably in a screaming match.
All because of Mason.
I shouldn't even think of him, but as I'm half-jogging through the hallways of the fourth floor, I can't help but wonder if he ever felt anything for me. I really could not get him out of my head. Everything reminded of him, with even the lightest of connections and memories. He was everywhere.
I tried to keep up with Ev, but she was many steps ahead of me by the time I passed a room where I got a glimpse of a familiar face.
Mason.
I could have sworn that was Mason's face.
Taking a few steps back, I paused at the doorway to peek it. Yep, definitely Mason. I turned to look down the hallway, where Evelyn was still rushing away. She turned back just at the turn to look for me.
"Go first!" I yelled down the hall. She had a questioning look on her face, but brushed it off to proceed.
Turning back to Mason, I noticed that he was awake. I guess I was louder than I was supposed to be. Slowly, I approached him, taking in all of the scratches on him. The sight of him like this made me want to cry, but I was relieved to see no broken bones.
"What happened," was all I could manage as I reached for his hand, which swallowed mine the moment we came in contact.
"I was going on a drive," he started with a raspy voice, "Probably a bad idea, considering all the sh!t that just happened."
I didn't say anything, and instead let my eyes say what I needed to express. As I looked into his eyes, I caught something I hadn't seen before. There was almost an extra layer of warmth in the way he gazed at me. It gave me hope.
And hope is a dangerous thing for unrequited love.
Don't be stupid, Harper.
"Why are you in a hospital bed? Are there internal injuries? What's wrong?"
"How did you know I was here," he asked in response.
"Evelyn got a call that Lia-" I paused, processing everything, "Mason Richard Van der Gelt, I swear to GOD if you got in a car accident with Liam on purpose, I will skin you alive and feed you to the dogs."
"No!" He was quick to clear things up with a chuckle. "I was just out driving, looking for you. I had some things I needed to say, and I was so lost in my head that I didn't even see the yellow light turn red. I saw Liam right the second before he dodged me, and I think that's why he has the worst injuries. He ran straight into the streetlight pole."
"You still haven't answered me. Why are you in a hospital bed with just these scratches?" I gestured to his face. Which was still so goddamn hot.
"Liam needs a kidney. He's hurt pretty bad." He sighed heavily, "They're running tests to see if I'm a match."
"You'd do that?" I was shocked. The last time I saw him, he looked about ready to kill Liam. I was sure of it.
"When you... poured your feelings out at me, I didn't know what to do with it," he paused, looking away from me almost in shame. "And I thought about all the times we'd been together and I realized that I have been unfair to you."
