"Hello Melanie," Britt greeted.

"Hi Brittany," Mel said sweetly. She sounds like an innocent kid just like she did in the dream. Well at least she's trying to get on Jake's good side.

"Who exactly are you Melanie," Jake asked kindly.

"I'm an orphan."

"Do you want something to drink sweetie?"

Melanie looked at me questionately.

She must be asking if she can stop the innocent act. That's a bad idea, but I'd rather her be herself.

I nodded and smiled.

"Don't talk down to me okay Jakey," she said talking to him as if he was the child that wouldn't understand a word she just said.

"Okay who is she?" Jake looked at me frustrated.

"She's the kid we're going to take in," I commented.

"What are you talking about."

"Jake she's gone through some hard times at a young age. Don't you want to help?"

"What kind of hard times?"

"I've been on my own since my dad killed my mom in front of me, tried to kill me, was arrested, and then killed himself in the prison."

"Sis I think we should wait till you remember everything. Having a child around won't help your condition."

"Sorry Jake, but she's staying. We can't make her leave. Dad knows about her now. If we leave her he'll kill her or maybe even worse."

"What makes you think he already knows?"

"He has more people watching us. If he doesn't already know about her he will within the next two minutes."

"If you're sure you can handle this I'll back you up. Just take it easy okay? I'm worried about you."

"I'll try and take it easy from here on out. Don't be so protective of me. I prefer the nice, trusting Jake I barely remember."

I walk up to him and hug him tightly. He is still taller than me so I tuck my head under his chin. He kisses me on the forehead.

I remember doing this as a kid. There was nothing more comforting than Jake's arms around me back then.

I pulled back and Jake smiled. I went to sit on the bed and called Mel over to sit next to me. She and Jay sat on either side of me.

"So Melanie tell me something about you," Jake said.

Well at least he's not talking down to her. He's trying. That's all I can ask for.

"Like what? You want to know my past homes, how terrible I am with other kids.."

I nudged Mel slightly in the arm. She looked up at me. I smiled. "Be nice," I mouthed silently. She rolled her eyes.

"How about what your favorite color is," Britt suggested cheerfully. "Mine is pink."

"I like the color red," Mel paused. "It was my mom's favorite color because she loved the roses in our neighbor's garden."

"I like roses too. They remind me of my sister. They're fragile looking, but they can easily take care of themselves with their thorns if they need to."

"Yeah your sister reminds me of a rose too," she smiled at me.

I was about to reply when the door opened. I looked up and was greeted by the delighted face of Cas.
