My life didn't immediately change when I met Jay. He was my brother's best friend and he still is to this day. That's all he really was to me then. I had never properly met him or any of his family. I wasn't even sure if he knew my name.
After my dad was arrested Jay's mom, Shannon, offered to take Jake and me in so we wouldn't have to go in foster care. Honestly I didn't care where we were as long as I was away from that monster who had been the cause of my nightmares ever since I was 3. The state agreed to let us stay with her and after she signed a lot of papers, she gained custody of me and my brother. We were getting a second chance, a chance to save what was left of our childhood.
When I arrived at Jay's house he ran outside to great us. It was a bit awkward. He had tried breaking the ice with a joke it didn't work out very well.
"Hi," I said quietly expecting him to look right past me.
"Hello, friend" he said and his voice was full of warmth and joy not full of pitty, like his mother's voice had been. I hadn't heard a voice like that in years. It was nice getting away from the anger.
I stared at the ground, twiddling my thumbs, not daring to look him in the eyes. I was too afraid to, what if he was just like my dad and slapped me if I tried to look him in the face.
"You want to hear a joke?" He asked shifting uncomfortably in front of me.
"She love jokes," Jake answered encouraging me to calm down. "Right Ashley?"
"Ummm.... yeah," I answered quietly.
"Why the chicken cross the road?"
"I don't know."
"To get to the other side," he said.
SILENCE.
COMPLETE SILENCE.
I didn't laugh. I didn't even think it would hurt his feelings if I didn't. That joke wasn't funny.
"That wasn't a very good joke," I said in a flat tone.
"Oops, I told it wrong. Let's try that again," he said. There was a mischievous tone in his voice. "Why the chicken cross the road?"
"I don't know," I sighed.
"To get to the other side," he sang in a very over dramatic voice.
Now that got a laugh out of me. I looked him in the eyes and smiled. I hadn't truely smiled in years. To tell you the truth I don't think I had ever really smiled until that moment.
Something sparked within me that day. The only problem is that I realized the spark and the cause too late.

Hi. My name is Camellia. I am so excited to write this story. I already have another chapter done, but I think I am going to try to post once or twice a week because school is about to start and I would feel terrible if I didn't keep my promise. I feel like no one is going to read this story.
So anyway in the comments I would love to talk to any of you guys.
So ya bye. ;)
