The sun was warm on Kai's face, shuffling around underneath the softest of sheets he's ever felt. Turning and snuggling further into the mattress did his nose breath in the lovely scent of pine and cinnamon.
"Good morning, love," Carver's voice a low timber that had Kai's brows scrunching. Was he dreaming? Carver wouldn't be able to fit on his tiny bed. Peeking open a gray eye did his breath catch. Morning sunlight caught bits of Carver's dark hair, his ocean blue eyes truly cerulean. The soft lilt of a smile to his lips. The brush of sunlight dancing along his warm skin.
"This is a dream," Kai breathed, reaching for his beloved, heart aching. A deep rumbling laugh vibrated all the way down to his toes, gasping at his fingers touching the bare chest before him.
"It's not a dream," Carver whispered, dipping his head so their noses almost touched. Kai's eyes traced over every contour and line within his face. Their lips brushed in a teasing taste.
"I would say reality is much better, since I can truly touch you," Carver murmured, Kai's eyelids fluttering shut at the brush of his fingertips through his hair. Delicately tracing over his cheek and down his neck.
"Kiss you," Carver smiled, stealing Kai's breath who melted into the bed beneath him. Kai's fingertips leisurely followed the muscle contours of Carver's powerful back, over his ribs, down his corded abs. Carver pulled away, mirth twinkling in his eyes. Kai's lips parted, as if begging for more, Carver rumbling deep and low.
How did I get here? Kai thought vaguely before he was sitting up, nearly bashing his head into Carver's who pulled back quickly at his sudden movement.
"Kai?"
"I'm in the packhouse," Kai breathed, looking at Carver in alarm, the man moving so he was sitting crisscross on the bed.
"You are. You fell asleep in the car."
Kai's eyes grew very wide, grasping the sheets around him in a white-knuckled grip. A large hand was suddenly covering his, looking up to see Carver with furrowed brows.
"What's going to happen now?" Kai whispered. Carver hummed, scooching so that he could pull Kai into his lap. Kai resisted at first before curling up between his legs, resting his head against Carver's chest. He was so warm and smelled so divine. Kai's wolf was crooning and drowsily blinking at the comfort.
"Well, tomorrow morning you and your... pack... will have to go in front of the pack alpha as well as the pack's higher ranked wolves."
Kai shuttered at that, burying his face against Carver's chest, feeling his mate's large hands drag down his back over and over.
"You'll need to explain to them, and me, why you trespassed knowingly into our territory and why you had kept it hidden since you moved here," Carver said. Kai could hear the hurt in his words, whimpering.
"Carver," Kai whispered, guilt eating at his stomach, the pain of his past memories like acid. He felt his lip tremble, Carver's eyes growing sad.
"I-" But Carver held a finger against Kai's lips before kissing those very lips softly.
"Tomorrow, Kai. Just be with me, like this, until then."
Kai felt tears brim his eyes. He didn't want to tell people he didn't know about his past. He didn't think he could even choke out all the words he needed to with Carver.
"Why don't you take a shower, sweets, and then we can head downstairs for food," Carver said softly, patting Kai's tush who flushed at that, scooching off the bed. Nabbing some of his clothes from his backpack, Kai hurried into the bathroom. It gave him pause for a moment, the bathroom far larger and more extravagant than he was used to. Quickly blinking out of his stupor, he showered under the hot spray of water. A part of him was half tempted to walk out and grab his mate, dripping wet.
