I just got this idea and thought I'd publish it I don't know how it's going to end or when I will update but enjoy...

Caitlin sighed and shut her laptop lid she had so much work to do she wasn't sure if she'd ever get it finished at least not without coffee it was only 6PM so the sun was setting and it was still light out, but it was cold as it was early January and freezing so Caitlin grabbed her bag and coat, then started walking down the street to 'Queens Coffee Shop' or QCS for short the owners name was Oliver and he was dating Caitlin's best friend Felicity.

On her way down to the coffee shop she saw a homeless man who hadn't been there the last time she went to the QCS a week ago, he was sleeping and he had a bruise on his cheek and black eye that looked a few days old it was fading, his hair was dark brown and he looked about her age if not a year older she didn't want to stare but he seemed...different he didn't have a sign asking for loose change or anything he had a large rucksack that looked like it was for camping and a thin sleeping bag.

She decided she would get him a coffee too for when he woke up, she wasn't even sure what sort of coffee he liked, or even if he liked coffee but she was going to get him some anyway just so he knew someone cared even if when he woke up the coffee had gone cold. When Caitlin got to QCS it wasn't busy, there were a few people sat by the window using laptops all of them students and a few elderly couples and of course felicity flirting with Oliver over the counter.

She cleared her throat to get their attention and they both turned to her with matching grins."I'll just take two plane coffees with cream and sugar to go please" Oliver nodded and wandered off to the coffee maker.

Caitlin fell into a light conversation with felicity, but it soon ended when Oliver handed her the coffees.Caitlin thanked him paid then walked out only to be hit by the cold rain, she pulled her hood up and then she saw the homeless man, still sleeping Caitlin took out a pen and drew a smiley face on his cup then placed it down beside him.

She headed back to her apartment that was a 10 minuet drive away from campus because her parents didn't want her in some dorm with a strange roommate who could distract her from her studies. When she got back home, she kicked her shoes off sipped her coffee and went back to typing her essay which she didn't finish until the early hours of the morning.

A few days had past and she hadn't thought of the homeless man since that night she had just gotten out of a 2 hour lecture when a few of her friends, who weren't really her friends just people who wanted to be her friend because she was smart, beautiful and rich caught up with her and invited her for coffee at QCS.Caitlin had accepted but only because she was going there anyway because she was craving a slice of Oliver's carrot cake.

The group decided to walk there because it was a nice walk and they needed fresh air after being stuck in the lecture hall for so long. They were almost there when they walked past the homeless man Caitlin had seen a few days before sleeping and had left a coffee for.

She heard a few of the girls whispering not so quietly and laughing and pointing saying things like "tramp"

 "He's probably an ex-convict"

"It's his own fault"

"I dare you to steal his bag"Everyone started laughing Caitlin looked at the man, with a kind smile it was his eyes that caught her of guard she hadn't seen them the last time due to his state of unconsciousness but now that she could see then she found they looked sad and broken she didn't linger to long.

When the group got to QCS all she could think about was the homeless man when she was living back home in the suburbs, she hadn't really seen any homeless people because everyone who lived in her area were rich. Not even Oliver's carrot cake could take her mind of the guy with the sad eyes.

She stayed long after the group had left and once, they had gone she had ordered two coffees with cream and sugar to go and she had drawn a smiley face on his cup once again. She headed out it was only 5 pm so it wasn't that dark yet just a little cold she smiled when she saw the man with the sad eyes was still awake and came to stand before him, he looked up at her and frowned."What do you want?"

Caitlin shook her head alittletaken abackby his sharp words "nothing... I just wanted to give you this and... talk"

Caitlin said offering him the hot cup.He stared at her blankly "why so you can snap a selfie and send it to your friends or maybe post it on Facebook to make you look like a good person?"

Caitlin stared at him a look of disbelief on her face "No you just look lonely I promise I won't take any photos" The man let out a sigh and accepted the cup and his lips tugged into a small almost smile when he saw the smiley face scribbled on the side of the cup.]

"Can I sit?" She asked gesturing to the place next to him.

"You want to sit next to a homeless man in the middle of the street where anyone can walk past and see us?"

Caitlin just rolled her eyes and sat down beside him.He just gapped at her as he watched her sit down but didn't say anything."So, what's your name?"

She asked. No answer."Ok then we're not doing the name exchanging thing that's fine I just won't tell you my name either and I'll keep refusing to you as the sad eye guy in my head"

He turned to look at her then head tilting to one side "the sad eye guy" he echoed then shrugged

"sure call me want you want but don't tell me your name I'll just keep calling you smiley face cup girl or smiley face for short"Caitlin rolled her eyes

"then I'll call you eye guy for short"Eye guy didn't say anything just took another sip of his coffee.

"Do you like it?" She asked

"being homeless? yeah it's swell! the pavement is so comfortable it's like sitting on clouds" he said sarcastically.

Caitlin gaped at him "I meant the coffee"

"I know what you meant I just thought if my attitude would scare you off"

"Nope" Caitlin said popping the P.

Eye guy just shook his head."so, what's your favorite color?" She asked.

"You really want to get to know the homeless guy?"Caitlin nodded

"yes because you're a human being with a story behind how you got here no doubt you don't seem like a bad person or a drunk you just seem...I don't know different"

"You want to fix me?" He huffed.

"No because you're not broken just...lost"She saw the moment he softened and let one of his many barriers down.

They sat in an awkward silence for a while until he finally muttered "red"

Caitlin met his eyes "what?"

"My favorite colour is red"
