Chapter 16
Ithink I never felt more empty in my entire life. I was watching thefamiliar neighborhood pass and tears were silently rolling down mycheeks. My life had fallen apart and now I was sitting in front of athousand tiny pieces that I somehow had to glue back together.
Ididn't realize that the car had stopped but after some time I felt ahand on my shoulder.
I looked at doctor Goldstein and saw a sadlook on her face. This was it. I would lose the only person that Ihad made friends with. Yes. Sad to see that my only 'friend' was adoctor that saved me from dying. You would think that my friends fromschool had called and visited me but nobody seemed to have the ballsto do so. If they couldn't face a conversation with that 'poor girlthat lost everyone she had', they weren't real friends. The onlyperson that actually contacted me was my best friend. She was livingin Norway and had no chance to come over. At some point of time I wasable to convince somebody to get me my laptop from home and when theydid I saw a 367 emails and 459 missed Skype calls from my friend. From that day on we emailed each other constantly. She was the onlyperson I could rely on and she was thousands of miles away in Europe. She too had German ancestry and she once lived almost next door. Weboth had one parent from Germany, one from the US. We always talked amix of German and English. Not many people knew I could speak Germanand stuff but it could come handy at times.
"Zoey, you ready togo?", I was pulled out of my thoughts by Dr. Goldstein. I must havezoned out for quite some time, seeing the look on her face.
"No...But yeah. Let's get going."
"Wait. I've got something for you.So we can keep in touch. I know yours broke in the crash", she saidand gave me a little package. I had no idea what was in there.
"Comeon, unwrap it", she said, pushing me to open the gift.
Icarefully tore off the wrapping paper and I almost dropped the entirething when I saw what was inside.
"I cannot take that! That'sfar too much!", I exclaimed.
In the wrapping paper there was abrand new mobile phone. I was shocked. That must have been worth afortune.
"No Zoey. You need a cell, you're fifteen and I wannakeep in touch with you. I'm worried about you. It's really nothing",Doctor Goldstein said and smiled.
"I've already got my laptop,we could write emails to each other!", I said.
"Really? Whatcentury do you live in? Ever heard of something called a text? OrWhatsApp?", she said and chuckled slightly. I rolled my eyes at hercomment.
"No, but seriously. Take it. I already saved my contactand the one of these police officers. This thing will be handy foryou at some point of time", she said and smiled.
"Seriously....I feel bad taking this... but if you insist... thank you so much",I said and wrapped my arms around her. She returned the hug and itlasted quite some time. And it ended to soon. I took a deep breathand got out of the car, my doctor following me.
That was it. Thenew part of my life had officially begun and I wasn't sure if it wasgoing to be good or bad.
