Now I was alone with those two scary police officers. Great. Bad news again? Or something good for once? Probably not. With my bad luck something good would be quite a surprise. They seemed pretty uncomfortable. Yep, something bad. For sure.
"There is something we need to talk to you about Miss Hastings...", the taller one said. He looked pretty nice. Soft face, bright eyes. The other one looked rude. I don't know why I had this kind of impression... I just don't know.
"What is it?"; I was quite nervous. Really, what could it be this time?
"First of all... we are really sorry for your loss. After the crash we needed to identify everyone who was involved... And we realized that your parents did not exist until fourteen years ago."
"Wait what? What do you mean?", I was completely confused. What did that mean?! Sure my parents existed fourteen years ago!
"We looked through everything and the names Elizabeth Hastings and John Hastings only started showing up fourteen years ago. We found out that your parents, you and your sisters were in a witness-protection program. The people, the police tried to protect you all from, finally found you and hit your car with the truck. We suppose that they wanted to kill all of you so now their focus is on you"; the tall one explains.
"Oh my god...", I was speechless, "This can't be true... I mean... how is that even possible?"
"We don't know. That is the problem. There is no way that they could've found you. We have the theory that one of the policemen that knew about the place you lived at is corrupt and either worked for them or simply told them about your whereabouts. I am so sorry, this shouldn't have happened", it seemed like the nice guy did the talking, the other did the staring. Seriously, why did he even come if he wasn't talking?
I was absolutely confused. Why were there people trying to kill my family and me??
"Why were they in the program?", I asked the nice officer.
"They witnessed a horrible crime. They were kidnapped by an organization and watched how dozens of people were killed. It is a wonder that they made it out there alive. You were still a little baby when this happened, about sixteen month old. They came into the program because ever since that happened, the organization tried to find them and kill the only witnesses that made it out there. You could compare them with the mafia.", he explained everything. I was close to tears but I didn't want to lower my guard and cry. Seriously, why was my life so messed up?
"What is going to happen to me now?", I asked, scared to hear the answer.
"I guess you will come into an orphanage", he says, a sorry look in his eyes.
"But... won't they find me there?"
"Not necessarily. Also, I will be close all the time. You will be supervised until we are sure that you are safe. Mr. Reed and me will be the undercover agents that will look after you in the future.", he said.
"So you will be around all the time Agent...?", I asked. Maybe I didn't listen when he introduced himself, maybe he just didn't introduce himself at all.
"Oh sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Agent Richmond."
"Thank you for explaining all this officer", I said. I really appreciated it that he was so nice and understanding. The other guy still didn't say a single word since he entered this room.
"Sure, I hope you don't feel too uncomfortable knowing that we have an eye on you all the time", he said.
"Well I guess it's better than being killed. I am actually quite glad that I am not dead yet even though I have no family anymore."
The officer nods understandingly.
"Uhm... I am really sorry, but could you leave me alone for some time now? I don't wanna be rude... but there is a lot my brain needs to process..", I was feeling so uncomfortable asking this but I was so tired. I could barely oppress a yawn.
"Oh sure, sorry. We didn't want to bother you that long. Just get well soon, please", Agent Richmond said and smiled.
The police officers stood up, said goodbye and left the room. I was alone now and my head was pounding. Seriously, my brain was too tired to function.
Slowly I fell asleep.
