Mauricia and America had already heard the news of Jack's death.
America said that Mauricia had done nothing but cry for a week.
Afterwards, she wanted to go home, back to Kingston.
I had no idea if I'd ever see them again after saying good-bye at the docks where their ship was moored in Charleston Harbor. I had told America that her place was with Mauricia - that Mauricia would need her best friend for a long time. I told America that I needed some time to be with Jack's family and with my own family. She hugged me tightly and said she loved me and would never forget me.
I told her I would find her in Kingston someday.
