We didn't speak to Pendleton about our suspicions that we didn't completely trust him to do well by the girls and the darkies. It wouldn't have helped anything. And Jack didn't want me to say anything to Mauricia about our conversation. So we continued to drift along not quite knowing about how life would be the next day. Jack was fine with uncertainty but I wasn't so keen with living that way.
That night after Pendleton returned - having left the girls and the darkies at his home - we sailed the ship back down the Cooper River and into Charleston Harbor where we set anchor, then all five of us got into a boat and took it to the docks and tied it up. Pendleton knew people around the docks who he paid to keep an eye on his ship and the boat. He rented a wagon for a week and we all set out for his home up along the Cooper River. Mauricia and America were so glad to see us.
"I'm not letting you out of my sight again, Jackie dearest," Mauricia said as she gave Jack a big hug. I looked at Jack and he at me and we both burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?" said Mauricia.
"Nothin' there girlie. Jeremy and me were just talkin' about how much we missed you two young ladies and that we couldn't wait to see you again. Ain't that right there, Jeremy pal?" said Jack.
"Um. Yeah. But I don't think we were in total agreement, Jackie pal, about just how much we missed them," I said.
"What are you saying then?" said America.
"Oh. Nothing really," I said. "Just that there's missing someone and there's missing someone. After all, it's just been half a day - it's not like it's been a year since we saw you last."
"Do you feel that way too?" Mauricia asked Jack, her hands wrapped around his neck.
"Look girlie. I already said what I said. If that fool wants to complicate things more than they are, you should be asking him. He's the one with the big mouth!"
"Okay," I said. "I wasn't going to say it but Jack was nearly cryin' last night when he talked about how much he missed this one! Ain't that right Jack?" I said.
"Man you are just beggin' to get your dumb ass beat!" Jack said.
"Mauricia, I think the two of you should spend a lot of time together alone today," I said. "Take some time off. Jack needs a break from all the excitement and stress of the voyage, the constant responsibility. Take one of Pendleton's canoes on the river shore and go for nice long ride with a picnic lunch. Something like that," I said, "Wasn't that what you suggested last night Jack?"
"Oh Jackie, that would be so much fun and we haven't really spent so long a time a together. Can we do that Jackie, my love? Please? Can we?" said Mauricia.
"Why girlie, I couldn't come up with anythin' I'd like better to do with my time today - other than maybe beat this fool's ass when we get back," Jack said.
"Why Jack, what's got into you? You do want to go don't you?" I said.
"Forget it. I'll have a word or two with you later on sonny boy!"
