The Whalebone Inn

As Jack and I worked the oars on the ten-foot rowboat while going from ship to shore, Mauricia said she wanted to visit the pub where she and her mom had lived in the upstairs apartment during the first five years of her life. "It's not far from the wharf," she said, "and I'd be so grateful."

"What's the point?" said Jack

"What's the point?" said Jack.  "Ain't nothin' for you there now but trouble maybe. No sense in  lookin' for it."

"It's important to me, Jackie. I want to be able to look that horrible man in the eye and tell him what a selfish human being he is," she said. "For me and my mum!"

"That was over ten years ago," I said, "and the barkeep you told us about may be dead by now or moved or something. Why go looking for trouble like Jack said?" I said. "We've already got plenty."

"I have to do this! I feel there is a higher reason why we all came here to Praia where I was born - it's like God revealing his plan for me," Mauricia said. "I won't make trouble. I just want to be there one more time, even if that poor-excuse for a human isn't there anymore. I grew up there and I do have fond memories too."

"God, huh?" said Jack. "All right girlie, tomorrow, not today though. Today we don't need any distractions. We stay near the water because we want to keep an eye out during the daylight hours so that, if there's any trouble aboard ship, we get back fast as we can to see what we can do. Sound like a plan there girlie?"

"Oh that'd be just wonderful, Jackie, or rather, Captain Jack," said Mauricia who put her arms around Jack and kissed him full on the mouth. "You do love me, don't you Jackie?"

"Well sweetie face, nothin's a'certain right now and you and girlie there are a'headin' back to your Kingston after we get out of here so that pretty much says it all, don't it?" Jack said.
