Marinette's P.O.V
Soon enough it was nearing the end of class and I had accomplished nothing except a few scribbles and drawings. Mrs. Bustier stood up and cleared her throat to grab our attention before the bell rang, signaling our 1 hour lunch.
I had been in this class too long, and for what? I'd already familiarized myself with the back of Adrien's head and the way his white overshirt hung off his shoulders and arms.
Mere minutes after Alya and I had finished communicating, he had completed his work and pulled out his english essay that would be due in a week's time.
I only knew that because I had the same essay due; not like I'd started.
My focus shifted from his back to Mrs. Bustier as she cleared her throat to speak.
"As you know, there have been rumors about a big project coming up that will be worth forty percent of your overall grade for the third nine weeks. I'd like to put these rumors to rest and confirm this suspicion by saying there will be a big project."
I, along with the entire class except for Sabrina, groan in disapproval.
"Since this is for a large portion of your grade, you will get to work with a partner that you will choose. You have the last ten minutes of class to find a partner and the rest of the day off to work on it. In all you will have two weeks to complete this assignment. Once you find your partner, there are rubrics on my desk explaining the project and what is acceptable and unacceptable."
While nervous for the work, I knew I didn't need to worry about finding a partner. Alya and I always partnered up and it was comforting.
Imagine being paired with Chloe?? I felt so bad for Sabrina.
I turn to ask what we'd be doing, but I find her arm in arm with Nino; both with grins on their faces. My eyes widen and I instantly become nervous. I look to see Adrien finally turning around, witnessing the same thing I was.
"Adrikins! Hey! We are so going to be partners!"
I sigh and spot Chloe stalking over with Sabrina hot on her heels. She looks utterly sad and I instantly feel bad. I look back to Adrien and I'm surprised to see a slightly scared expression covering his face. I roll my eyes at Chloe as she walks up to Adrien and tries to wrap her arms around him.
"Uh Chloe I was actually gonna ask... uh... Marinette!" Adrien turns his head and breaks a smile my way. "That is, if you want to." he adds.
Suddenly he's looking at me with hopeful eyes and my mouth opens like a fish.
Catching myself smiling, I frantically nod my head; afraid of losing my chance or waking up from this dream. I see Chloe's eyes narrow and her eyebrows pull together.
"Her?" she scoffs. "Why would you want to be partners with her?" she exclaims as a smirk appears.
I frown a bit and look from Adrien to her.
"I wouldn't be partners with Mari-Trash if someone paid me in new clothes. She, and her whole family, suck! I wouldn't be surprised if her pastries tasted like trash- considering they're made in the dumpster."
I cower back as usual. I don't like giving her the satisfaction of her knowing she got to me.
Maybe next time, Marinette. My head snaps up as I hear a backpack slam on the desk in front of me. Discovering it's Adrien's bag, my eyes widen. So do Chloe's.
"Give it a rest, Chloe. Marinette is an amazing girl and she doesn't deserve you picking on her around the clock. Her family is perfectly sweet and so is the food they make- so you're wrong. They are not trash and I do want her to be my partner."
I'd never seen Adrien angry, but he looked close to it now. His cheeks were tinted red and his fists tightened around the straps of his bag. Chole's mouth slacks open and she snaps her glare back and forth between Adrien and I. She then huffs, seeing he had nothing more to say, and stomps back to a cheering Sabrina; knowing she hadn't lost her partner after all.
I released a breath I didn't realize I'd been holding. Feeling a stare hot on my skin, I look back to where I'm standing. Light green eyes that bore into my bluebell ones sparked and I couldn't help but smile.
"So Marinette- I know you nodded and everything, but I just want a solid answer if you're okay with being my partner." he said as if he hadn't shot Chloe down moments before.
I nod my head once again, trying to tone it down a bit. "Uh- yes! Yeah! Adrien." I deadpan as I finish, feeling my ears warm.
That was awful.
He smiles and nods back, turning to walk over to the desk that held the rubrics.
Returning, he hands one to me and stores the other in his bag.
"Would you mind if we worked on it at your place? Father's pretty strict on who comes over."
I mentally sigh at not getting to explore Adrien's house, but nod nonetheless.
"Absolutely-yeah!"
He grins and slings his bag over his shoulder."Perfect! I'll go tell my driver the news- see you outside!"
He turns to leave, but stops when he realizes he missed a pen laying on his desk.
I look at Alya and she's smirking. Her gaze says 'you can thank us later, good luck!' and I shake my head, not being able to wipe the smile off my face.
I go to step down from my seat, but I'm surprised to see Adrien still in front of me- this time with his hand outstretched. He looks as surprised as I am, as if he didn't even realize the gesture. In shock, I sputtered out what I had been thinking.
"We can eat lunch at the bakery then stay there for a while to get started on the project."
His eyes widen more, but it turns to a grin.
Had I just spoken a full sentence without stuttering?
His hand still hung in the air and I looked from it to his eyes again.
"I think Chloe spilled something, I don't want to slip or anything."
Taking his hand and wondering who I'd become, I walk out the door hand in hand with none other than Adrien Agreste himself.
