Chapter 3
Crash
I'm being gently shaken. "Carter, wake up, it's time to get up."
I open my eyes and see Clyde standing over me and moan. "Go away."
"But don't you want to see dad?"
"DAD? Yes! Yes! Yes!"
"Get out butt out of bed then!"
I shoot out of bed and grab some black skinny jeans and a blue galaxy sweater, with a tank top from the closet. "I'll be out of the bathroom in twenty minutes." I holler to Clyde as I jog to the bathroom.
I shower quickly and rush to do my hair and makeup. I packed my only hair straightener, so I'll have to slip on a beanie. I rush back to my room and almost slam into Clyde. "Sorry." I mutter as I slip past him.
"Don't forget to pack blankets and pillows!" He calls after me.
Right, I almost forgot! I grab a fresh black garbage bag off my desk, I don't even bother wondering why I have a roll of garbage bags is on it, and stuff some blankets and pillows in it. Then I remember I'm supposed to be finding a beanie. I shuffle into my closet and look through my hats. No, no, no, not, and ewes. Ah ha! Perfect. I think as I grab a black beanie that says "Bad Hair Day". I laugh because this beanie is just so perfect and the story behind it is great.
A school friend of mine, Bianca, and I had to go to the mall for some school project and we decided to totally ditch the project and the whole school for shopping. We stumbled across this adult-ish shop; it was full of crazy weirdo people. The store had a lot of drug type stuff, but it also had a lot of brands and characters I liked, so we stayed. We ended up trying on a whole bunch of stuff, and buying half of it, this hat was one of them. There was a lot of laughing and picture taking and it was pure fun.
I shake my head to get rid of the memory and slip the beanie on my head. I can't dwell in the past, it's not good. I hurriedly grab the bag that I stuffed with blankets and pillows and run to the truck to pack it up. Clyde is there, in the truck, waiting for me. "Hi." I say climbing into the cab.
"Nice hat." He says smiling. He knows the whole beanie story, but I've blocked some of it out. "Did you say goodbye to mom?"
"She's still here?"
"I think so."
"Kay, be right back." I say as I get back out of his truck. I run into the house calling for my mom, but I didn't see her car outside, so I doubt she's here. I look everywhere, but can't find her. She already left. How dare she not say goodbye to me! I collapse to the floor and start to cry. Why wouldn't she say something before she left? I'm not sure how long I'm lying here crying, but eventually Clyde finds me.
"Hey, what's wrong Carter?" He asks sitting next to me and wrapping me in his arms. "There's no need to cry. It's okay."
"Mom left, and she didn't even say bye. Doesn't she love me anymore?"
"Oh, of course she does Carter. You know how mom gets, she was probably running late and spaced it." He rubs my back. "Common we need to get going." He stands up and offers me his hand.
I stand without saying anything and head to the truck. Clyde follows slowly; I can hear him texting. But I can't figure out who he would be texting, he doesn't have a girlfriend. I get in the truck and wait for Clyde. He was right behind me, where'd he go? I wonder.
Five minutes later Clyde walks out of the house, his face is red and he looks a bit angry. I don't say anything and he doesn't offer an explanation. I wonder if he yelled at mom, or got in a fight with a friend or something with drugs, but it's not my business and if he wanted it to be then he'd say something to me. I sigh and recline my seat, crying tried me out, so I'll take a nap, and then I'll feel better.
I wake up as my body smacks against my seatbelt. I don't have time to wonder what's going on before the airbag hits me in the shoulder. I cry out in pain and try to look for Clyde, but I can't see because blood is dripping from my forehead.
I black out.
