Chapter 26
A Girly Shock
I’ve been trying to avoid Miley all week. I don’t know how I feel about her right now. I’m upset she doesn’t like cats, but I don’t think that has anything to do with my sudden unhappiness. I feel so tired all of the time, I can’t keep up with the way she lives. There are always cameras and everyone is talking over everyone else. I want a quiet relationship, where I don’t have to worry about every little thing being twisted by paparazzi. Besides, I don’t think we actually have anything in common.
Tonight, I will tell her. She has the next few days off, so it’s not like this will affect anything.
I sigh and roll over on the couch at Clyde’s house. He isn’t home, but at work. I think he only is here to sleep, eat, shower, and then he is gone again. I think he knows something is up with Miley and me, but he hasn’t said anything. I just want my brother back.
Hours later, I’m flipping through channels on Clyde’s T.V. and eating popcorn. My phone suddenly buzzes next to me, which is odd because Miley’s on a plane and Clyde’s phone is on the kitchen counter. I wipe my hands off on my jeans and pick up my phone. It’s a number I haven’t programmed into my phone. I open the text.
Hi there. c: Is this Clyde’s sister? He told me to text you.
What are you up to Clyde? I think.
Yes, this is Carter. Who are you, and how do you know my brother?
I’m Natalie, your brother works for my dad’s gym.
I sit and stare at the text for a few minutes trying to figure out what Clyde is trying to do.
Finally I text back: Are you with my brother now?
Yeah, of course I am. (:
May I speak with him please?
Moments later my phone starts to ring.
“Hello?” I answer sweetly.
“Carter, I’m working. What–”
I cut him off. “Why did you give that girl my number?”
“Because you need friends Carter, you can’t just hang out alone or with Miley all the time.”
“Clyde, I’m not stupid. I know there is more to it than that. You have never cared about me having friends before. So why do you care now?” I get up and start to walk in circles around the couch.
I hear Clyde sigh. “You’re my little sister, I know you. Carter, I can tell you’re unhappy being with Miley. Whenever I see you, you have bags under your eyes, and they are bloodshot. Plus you are always complaining about having to go to some stupid thing she’s dragging you to.”
“What are you trying to say?”
“I’m saying you need to get to know Natalie because she can give you the relationship you’re looking for.”
“Clyde, how do you know this? What makes you think she even likes girls? Why don’t you make her your girlfriend?” I interrogate him.
“Oh my poor sweet innocent little sister, did you really not think that I would hit on her first? She is drop dead gorgeous!” He laughs. “Carter, she shot me down because she likes girls, not guys.”
I furrow my eyebrows as I take this in. “And you know she’ll like me how?”
“Because I’m your brother, and I’ve talked to her a lot.”
“Fine, I’ll meet her. But I’m not promising anything.”
“Really?” He sounds shocked. I don’t think he thought I would agree to this.
“Yeah, I was thinking about breaking up with Miley tonight.” I pause. "Like you said, things aren't going well."
“Uh okay, I’ll let you guys figure stuff out then.”
“Okay, bye.” I say and hang up.
I sigh and flop myself onto the couch. What have I gotten myself into? Just because I don’t want to be with Miley anymore doesn’t mean I want a new relationship. I want to be free.
My phone vibrates with a text, so I pick it up and look at it. It’s from Natalie.
Want to have dinner and see a movie tomorrow? I’ll pick you up.
Sure, sounds great. I’ll have Clyde drive me though. I think it’d be awkward if you came for me. Because this can't be a date..... Yet.
Kay, I’ll see you tomorrow. (: -xoxo

I’m pacing the living room at Clyde’s while waiting for Miley to pick me up for our date. I didn’t dress too nice, but nice enough to look like I care. Miley is taking me to some over the top fancy restaurant; she thinks that I love all of attention and seeing all of the celebrities.
Clyde walks into the kitchen and sees me pacing, but he doesn’t say anything, he just grabs a bottle of juice out of the fridge. I can tell that working at the gym is doing well for him because his shirts are getting to tight, his muscles are profound.
I stop pacing. “Clyde, you should really go shopping.” I shout as he walks down the hall.
“I’ll get around to it.” He shouts over his shoulder.
I see lights come into view and know that Miley is here.
“Miley’s here, I’ll be home later!” I shout to Clyde.
“Make smart choices.” I hear him yell to me as I walk out the door.
Roughly fifteen minutes later we are sat down and ordering dinner. Miley is so talkative that I only have to nod and comment on the occasional thing. I am actually enjoying myself a little. We go through dinner happily and as she is driving me home it’s quiet. If I want to end it, I have to do it now.
I look over at Miley and see her happy smiling face. I can’t hurt her, not today because she seems so happy. She sees me looking at her and her smile grows bigger.
“Hey cutie, did you have fun tonight?” She asks me.
“Yeah, I had a great time.”
It’s not a complete lie.
“Want to come to my house or does Clyde need you at home?”
“Clyde needs me. You know he can’t cook worth crap.” I laugh.
“Alright, so I’ll see you tomorrow?” She questions as we pull into Clyde’s driveway.
“I’m actually booked up tomorrow. Clyde needs to go shopping for new clothes, and it won’t happen without me.”
Miley’s smile disappears. “Okay.” She gives me a kiss before I get out of the car. “Text me?”
“Sure.” I say before shutting the door and walking inside.
When I get inside Clyde is watching T.V. but he’s not alone, there is a girl on the couch with him.
