Chapter 5

Dad's house

We pull into dad's driveway roughly ten minutes later. Clyde got a little lost because he didn't know which house was dads. We haven't seen dad since he moved into this house, he's been in a few different houses since the divorce.

The house is a huge, beautiful log home. It's not shaped like a normal house; it's kind of like a pyramid, with a deck on each of the three levels, with stairs leading up to each of them. There are a lot of windows, small and large. There is also a stone entry way that you turn into.

It's so beautiful, but why does dad need such a big house? I wonder to myself.

My question is answered when my dad walks out with a women clinging to his side. She's a head shorter than he is with bleached blonde hair; she looks like a human Barbie. I'm instantly disgusted with her, no doubt she is only with my dad for his money. Dad looks different too. His brown hair is shaggy and a little too long for my taste. His blue eyes look hollow and he seems tired. I frown, dad is supposed to be happy.

I hop out of the car and Clyde follows, we give each other a look that says kill me.

"Hi daddy!" I shout and run to hug him. He lets go of the girl, well more shoves her off of him cause she won't let go, and meets me half way lifting me into a hug. "Who's she?" I whisper in his ear before he sets me down.

"We'll talk about it later." He whispers back.

I glare at him, but don't say anything more, instead I step back and eye Clyde telling him with my body to act like he likes our father.

"Dad." Clyde says and shakes our father's hand.

"Hey Clyde." Dad smiles. "You've grown."

"You've aged." They both laugh and Clyde relaxes." It's good to see you dad."

"Likewise." And then they are hugging. -- If I didn't know who was who, I would have though Clyde was hugging his future self. "Oh, kids. This is Charlotte; she's a friend from work."

I huff. Yeah a "friend". I roll my eyes.

"It's nice to meet you." Clyde and I say in unison. We look at each other and I giggle.

"Jinx, you owe me now."  I say with a wink.

"Come on, you two must be dying to see the house and get settled in." Dad says as starts back to the house. "Then I'll help you unpack."

We follow dad and the Barbie into the house. We walk into a wide and open living room, but surprisingly, there aren't any windows. There is a big fireplace that surrounds the living room and kitchen, which are connected. There are stairs to the right and a hallway on the left. Dad takes us upstairs.

"You both get a floor." Dad tells us. "You can decide who gets what floor after we look around."

I lean over and whisper in Clyde's ear. "We have to get rid of Barbie."

He nods in agreement. He probably thinks the same thing about her.

Dad shows us the second floor. It has two bedrooms, one bigger than the other. The bigger room has a door leading out onto the balcony and it has large windows. There is a bathroom next to the room. There's also a sitting area that is full of books and has a smallish T.V. and an arm chair and couch.

The third floor is just a like, but the balcony door is in the sitting room and it only has a couple small windows in the bedrooms.

I know that Clyde will want the middle floor so he can escape at night and go party, but I don't want him to leave me all alone with these two. So I pip up before Clyde can.

"I think I'll take the second floor." I say. This earns me a glare from Clyde and a look that says I know what you're doing. I smile at him.

"Well, now that you've seen the house I say we go get your stuff and head out for lunch." My dad says.

We head down stairs and dad helps Clyde and I unpack while Barbie sits on the living room couch filing her nails and watching some stupid show about buying things.

I'm getting my room situated when my dad knocks.

"Come in." I say.

"Hey. We need to talk."

"Yeah, we do." I turn from my suitcase. "Who's the girl and why the hell is she here?"

"I told you she's a friend from work."

"That's bullshit dad, we both know it. I see the way she clings to you."

"Okay, okay. So we are in a bit of a relationship, but I realized she only wants my money." Dad sits in a chair that's in the corner of my room. "I never had real feelings for her, but she wouldn't take no for an answer, and then her sister or boyfriend. . ." Dad trails off thinking. "Someone kicked her out of where she was living, and we were doing a project together at the time, and when she told me, I couldn't just say no."

"Dad, if you want me to stay. She has to go and Clyde will back me up."

"Carter is right, I'm on her side." Clyde says, leaning against the doorway.

"Okay, okay." Dad stands up. "I'll make her help me make lunch and in the process I'll make sure she gets out of here."

"Thanks daddy." I hug him as he leaves the room."

Half an hour later we are called down to lunch. When we get to the kitchen Barbie is angrily packing a suitcase on the couch. Clyde acts totally innocent. "What's going on? Where is Charlotte going?" Clyde asks looking at dad.

Dad plays along. "Oh, she decided that she needed some space and wanted to go stay in a hotel for a couple of nights."

"That's too bad." I say. "I'm sorry we couldn't get to know you, uh, Charlotte."

She gives me a dirty look and storms back into a room down the hall.

We sit at the island that's in the middle of the kitchen and eat our lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches. It's not a great lunch, but it's good. I know we will be fed better for the rest of the trip.

Dad leans on the counter. "So guys, I got concert tickets for tomorrow night." Dad looks at Clyde. "Feel up to going?"

Clyde eyes dad and doesn't speak.

"I'd love to go daddy!" I say bouncing on my bar stool.

We hear the front door slam. Dad leans over and looks at the front door. "Charlotte's gone."

Clyde speaks. "What kind of concert?"

Dad looks at Clyde. "A Miley Cyrus concert."

My jaw drops. "No dad!" I scream and storm off to my room.
