Elias went on and on hungrily staring at Alana and talking, talking, never stopping talking. Meanwhile she sawed away at the rope, back and forth. She frantically felt where she had been cutting - it was frayed but not yet cut. Elias circled her again and then stopped behind her. She strained her head to see him but she couldn't get a good view. He seemed to like that.

'I know what I need to do,' he said. 'I know exactly what I need to do.'

'What are you going to do?' she hissed.

'You're my guardian angel, right? You saved my life.'

She needed more time ...

'I didn't want you to die because of me. But I was wrong. I should have let you die - alone in your flat, your stomach full of pills. The world would be a better place if I had done that.'

He let out a pained sort of laugh.

'You would never want to see me die.'

'Yes I would. I want to see you die right now.'

The shirt hung over her hands but with him right behind her, it was more likely he would see the movement or even the blood from where her hand was cut.

'Why don't you come over here and say all this to my face?' she said.

'Because wings don't go on the front. Wings go on the back,' he answered.

She felt the rope fray a little more.

'Wings?'

'Yes. All angels have wings . And so you too shall have wings, my sweet.'

She sawed harder.

'I don't want wings, Elias. I'm not your angel, I'm not anybody's angel. I'm just me. Alana. I'm all human. Please, whatever you have planned ... Please ...'

'Shh,' he said, moving closer towards her. 'Right here. We will have them right here.'

He traced the knife along the top of her back, in a curving motion along her shoulder blade.

'No, Elias.'

A new wave of panic rose up.

'Don't hurt me. Just ...'

'Everything worth having hurts a little, didn't you know that?'

She let out a low roar as she heard his footsteps coming closer.

'Get away from me!'

She struggled and tugged away. She pressed the pen knife against the rope as hard as she could, her hands cutting against it. She couldn't see him, he was too close now but she could hear him, his breathing. Then she felt his hand on the back of her neck.

'Stay still,' he commanded.

She struggled as much as she could. She felt the rope stretching out. The she felt a sharp stab on her back, below her neck. She screamed out.

'Stop! Stop!'

But he didn't stop. He dragged the knife along horizontally, cutting into her skin so that blood poured down her back. The pain was so biting, so intense that she couldn't think. All she wanted was for it to stop. She flailed around and ripped at the rope in one big movement. The knife kept moving along her skin. She let out a howl and the rope suddenly broke. She wriggled her wrists and the rope fell to the ground.

In a flash she pulled her hands free and kicked back the chair with all her might. She heard Elias let out a surprised cry as it hit him in the chest. Her back felt like it were crushed and burned all at once. Her hands were raw and bleeding. She held tightly onto the penknife in her right hand and watched as he fell. As his wrist hit the ground the knife flung out of his hand across the floor.
