Dan stood in front of his mirror, nervous as ever. He wasn't sure about anything. His hair, his clothes, his cologne, the sound of his voice, he felt as though he was 16 again. Who could blame him though? Phil Lester had just asked him out on a date, a real date. Dan hadn't had one of those in about 3 years. As he pulled the navy sweater off of his body, he started rummaging through his closet again, looking for anything decent.
"Ah fuck it", Dan said as he pulled out the first thing he saw. It was Phil, he liked Dan before, so why would it matter what Dan was wearing?
He ended up with his classic black skinny jeans and his white Totoro shirt. He looked quite alright in his opinion.
He looked at the clock. 6:30. Phil would come pick him up in half an hour. Dan sighed softly and started playing some games on his phone until he heard the doorbell ring. His heart stopped. He mentally prepared himself for whatever was going to happen today and opened the door with a bright smile.
"Hi Dan", Phil said without a trace of nervousness in his voice.
"Hi Phil", Dan answered, praying to god he didn't look as red as he felt.
"Ready to go?" Phil asked. Dan grabbed his keys and nodded, following Phil to his car.
Phil, being the gentleman he is, opened the door for Dan, before making his way to the drivers seat.
"How was the rest of your day?" Phil asked, trying to make small talk.
"Uhm, quite alright. The kids made me tell them what I was up to though", Dan giggled.
"What did you tell them?"
"That I had a date", Dan smiled, date, it sounded so lovely.
"And?"
"They asked if it was with you".
"Why am I prime suspect?" Phil asked.
Dan shrugged, "apparently we flirt all the time".
"What did you tell them?"
"That you had a wife".
Phil chuckled at that, imagining it. "Did they buy it?"
"Not even for a second".
Before they knew it, they were at the coffee shop. Small talk and quiet giggles filled the room and Dan's heart felt as though it was going to burst. He only hoped Phil would feel the same. 3 hours passed and the barista politely asked them to leave. Dan looked up, 10pm already?
As they made their way back to Dan's house, he decided to get confident.
"Hey phil?" He asked.
Phil hummed in response.
"I've got a bottle of wine upstairs and no one to share it with".
A smile etched its way onto Phil's face as he walked up the stairs with Dan. He plopped down on the couch as Dan went to the kitchen to grab the bottle.
"Some cheese to go with it?" He yelled back to the living room.
Phil scrunched his nose up, "no thank you, I hate cheese".
Phil heard a gasp and as he looked up he saw a shocked Dan standing in front of him.
"You hate cheese?" Dan asked in disbelief.
Phil just nodded, taking the glasses from Dan and filling them halfway.
"What else don't I know about you?"
And so they started talking again. About Dan's love for animated series and Phil's fear of horses. About their favourite anime's and plays. About their classes, their families, and with each sip of wine, Dan felt his heart growing bigger. His eyes flicked from Phil's blue eyes, to his lips and back up. Phil seemed to notice because before Dan could finish his sentence he felt a pair of lips on his. Phil tasted like sweet gum and wine and Dan never wanted it to end.
His arms were wrapped around Phil's neck, heels digging into his lower back, drunken kisses with quiet laughs in between them. This is what Dan dreamed of, this is what Dan wanted.
Phil cupped his cheek and looked into his eyes. Dan felt like crying. This was all too perfect.
"Do you want to stay over?" Dan asked and Phil hummed before moving to the bedroom.
As they laid in bed, facing each other, the air started feeling thick, and Dan wondered if he had done something wrong.
Phil kissed the tip of his nose before breaking the silence. "I need to tell you one more thing", Phil said.
Dan knew this had to be something important.
"I-uh, I have a 4 year old running around at home most of the time".
Dan nodded, taking in the words.
"She's from a previous relationship, I just I don't want to continue this if you're not okay with it, not that I would blame you, I mean you're only 25 and", Phil started rambling.
"What's her name?" Dan asked, breaking Phil's freakout.
"Lily", Phil smiled.
"Do you have a picture?" Dan asked again.
Phil took his phone out and scrolled for a little while, he turned the screen to Dan, who fell in love at the sight before him. It was Phil on his knees, next to him was a small girl, her eyes were as blue as her dads and her hair was strawberry blonde. She had the biggest grin on her face.
"She looks just like you", Dan commented and Phil smiled at that.
"You don't think it's weird?" Phil asked.
Dan shook his head, "it's perfect".
They laid in silence for a while, until both of them dozed off into a deep and blissful sleep.
