I felt weird walking tru that door.  Most of people looked me straight in the eyes, some of them were smiling and some looked shocked. I tried to keep my head down as I didn't know what to tell them. So I walked and nodded sometimes and wanted it all end quickly. I didn't quite remember the place- it did ring the bell but with a bit of haziness. I was to meet my boss- well, former boss- for the first time since the accident. I was scared and felt nervous. Eric met me at the reception desk
"Hi man I thought you forgot"
"No I didn't but I had to wait for the visitors pass."
"Sure. Here's Paula. She's here as long as you were"
"Hi Paula... Again. "
"Hi Speed. God I can't believe you actually walked tru this door. Hope you'll come by later."
"Hope so Paula. Thanks."
"You see?" Said Eric quietly- "wasn't that bad. "
"Yeah. Where to now? "
"Horatio's office. How are you doing?"
"Great. Like a puppet -walking talking but not understanding ."
"I know. Don't worry. "
We headed up to the first floor. In the glass windowed office I saw a well known redhaired man.
"Hello, lieutenant Caine" I said entering.
He turned around suddenly. I immediately saw his eyes- sore and red. And surprizingly- I saw tears.
"Speed... Oh God!"
He came closer abruptly and hugged me. I was so surprised I just stood frozen. I felt his emotions flooding him which I guessed wasn't actually desired. I felt... anxious. I thought about how hard it had to be for him to wait for so long to see me. I was told we were close friends- more like father and son- he was there when I 'died' and he blamed himself for that. He kept away all the time and the day finally came. So I tried to relax a bit and gave him a hug too. He moved away and said "welcome home, we've been all waiting for you."
"Thanks lieutenant"
"And stop calling me that. I've never been called lieutenant by my employees"
"I'm not one of them"
"I know. But I still treat you as one. And no matter what happens that won't change. You understand me?" He said loudly
"Yeah, Hora..."
"H. It's H., Speed. You called me that first and let it stay that way."
"Sure. Try to remember. Why did you want to see me?"
"I needed you to sign some papers. "He moved a file in my direction. I opened it.
Timothy James Speedle.
The address. The ID number. Height.Weight... really? I weighed 80kg? Oh, whatever. My parents' names. My brother's. Place of birth. Education. Degrees... I suddenly felt dizzy.
"I... What am I supposed to do with it?"
"Sign. It's your actual data. Your REAL data. Sign the papers and come back to the world as Timothy James Speedle. "
"Well...quite a complicated guy I am, by the volume of this file."
"Yeah you are, Speed" he laughed out. Gave me a pen and with that one signature I became myself again. Actually I didn't know this Speedle guy but decided to know as much as possible.
"Can I keep the files? "
"No. But we can copy them for you. If you want."
"I do. I need to know sth more about myself. I guess."
"No problem. Will you stay for a while?"
"If Im not interrupting anything."
"No. Eric can take you to Trace Lab, maybe you'll find sth familiar there. "
"Sure. Thanks lieu..H. "
"That's better. See you later Speed."
"Yeah. Sure."
Eric was already waiting for me.
"So...trace?"
"Yeah. Why not. "
We went downstairs down the broad lane to the place where I spent many years of my life, day by day. There was the guy in white, doing sth bent over the table.
"Belmontes" Eric said
The guy turned to us and the probe almost fell off his hands.
"Jesus Christ...Speedle... You're really alive... Good to see you man!" He shook my hand.
"Sam Belmontes - Tim Speedle" Eric said from behind
"Hi Sam. Nice to... Meet you... Again."
"Gosh Speedle, it's the first time you called me by my name :)"
"Sorry"
"No... No problem. So...do you want to hang around here? "
"If I may"
"Yeah. Just don't touch anything."
"Sure. "
Belmontes and Eric started talking about a case and I approached the machine next to me- yeah...I know this one. It's for the chemical analysis...
"I know what it's for" I said loudly They both turned around and Belmontes said smiling
"That's good Speedle, cause we really need trace experts here. I've never known anyone so fast in doing analysis as you, I admit it with pain. "
"Why? Why with pain?"
"Well... Let's say you weren't the most cheerful person i know" he smiled
"Yeah, it appears so... So people didn't like me?generally?"
"No I wouldn't say that. Some of them hated you mostly because of your accuracy-not with the firearms of course- " I saw Eric blinking at him which Belmontes didn't appear to look at- " however you were quite funny at times. And a workaholic. That meant we had less to do. "
"Oh. I've heard that I used to be cheeky "
"No...not cheeky. Sercastic and sophisticated I'd say. Oh I would love to ask you some technical questions about the case but I sadly can't ."
"I'm not sure if I'd be of any help right now... But well. Hope we can meet soon and talk scientific way. Thanx anyway. "
"No problem mate. Good to see you again. Really. "
"Thanx. Have a nice day."
All I saw was Belmontes' quizzical look. I really had to be an ass.
I went back to Eric
"So...pizza tonight?"
"Eerm.. Ok." I said but I was a bit surprised.
"So... Let's get some fresh clothes and head straight there. "
"Sure. Can you give me a moment please? I'd like to talk to H. "
"Sure. Meet you downstairs."
I went up still feeling many eyes on me- people were staring, and calculating.
"H. "I said "I don't want to interrupt. "
"No... You don't. Come in"
"I wanted to ask you something. But I need an honest answer."
He frowned a little.
" Shoot"
"What must I do to be a CSI again?"
"You have to pass the test. Knowledge test. Practical and theoretical. You must also pass the test at the shooting range to get your badge and firearms back."
"You mean- to be a police officer again?"
"Yeah. But you don't need a badge to work here. It's privilege not the obvious necessity."
"I know. "
"So...you still think of coming back here?"
"...yeah.... Shouldn't I?"
"I didn't say that."
"But you've thought, haven't you?"
"I'm just saying it will be very
hard."
"I know. I'm not afraid of hard work. "
"I know you aren't. So learn a lot. And I'll help you with the range booking."
"Thanks. For a range. A bit of faith would also be appreciated." I said through my teeth. I felt my jaws tightening.
"Speed...."
"Oh, stop it, lieutenant! You don't believe it to happen, do you?"
"Speed.."
" It's Tim. There is no 'Speed' anymore. He died 2 years ago, on the tiled floor there, remember? "
I turned around and left quickly. All I saw was his hurt look. Oh, fuck it. Whatever.
I left.
