Thanks LuaKitsune for this idea.

Ezra woke up early.
He could sense Zeb was asleep so he carefully made his way down the ladder.
Walking out the door and through the hall, occasionally bumping into walls, he went to the entry ramp of the Ghost.
He was surprised to sense Kanan sitting there.
"Kanan?"
He felt a spark of surprise in his master before it settling down.
"Hey Ezra" he heard his friend reply.
He sat down beside his mentor.
"Kanan I need some advice. Last night I had a nightmare. Or a vision. I'm not to sure which. But it was about Maul. He promised me he was coming. Coming to take me. Raise me as his apprentice. Zeb comforted me when I woke, but I need to know what to do. I feel scared. I don't want Maul to take me."
He flinched slightly as he felt a hand roughly grip his shoulder.
"Ezra. I'm never letting anyone else hurt you or anyone I love ever again. You mean a lot to me and I'll do whatever it takes to help you."
Ezra couldn't help but notice how dark Kanan's voice sounded.
As if he was swearing he would go to his limits to make sure he kept his promise.
"Kanan. Have you been okay after what happened on Malacore?"
"What do you mean?"
"You don't sound or act the same. Everyone's told me about your behaviour lately. It isn't the same as it used to be."
"Ezra. What happened on Malacore left scars on all of us."
Ezra felt Kanan remove his hand from his shoulder.
What his master said was true.
Whether the scars being physical or emotional. They were there.
"I like the mask" Kanan said suddenly.
"Thanks" Ezra smiled.
As Kanan looked at Ezra's mask, he had another experience of guilt.
If he had been better with his lightsaber, Ezra would be looking at him right now.
With those unique blue eyes, not the grey ones behind a mask.
Kanan looked at the ground.

Why did it have to happen?

Suggestions are appreciated and welcome.
