I woke up at 9:41 AM by my phone going off. I looked at it and it read that one person who makes you freeze. Especially when you know she never calls unless it's serious. I pick up.
"Hey mom." I say yawning since she disturbed my slumber.
"Kels, when are you coming home? I know that you want to be Caylen's rock right now but Lyndsey is here and she doesn't look okay. I'm trying to talk to her but she wants you."
I panic a little considering she never called me or texted.
"Okay I'll come right now." I say a little shaky.
I leave a note for Caylen. It read:
Hey babe, Lyndsey came over to my house and my mom called me telling me to come home. I don't know when I'll come back but text me when you wake up. Love you -Kels
I looked over at Caylen and kissed her forehead before leaving the note on top of her phone and walking out the room, downstairs, out the beautiful oak door and hopping into my white Jeep.
I was at my house within 10 minutes. I rush into the house leaving my phone in the car on accident. I open the door and see Lyndsey with tear stained cheeks.
"Lynds" I say concerned.
She gets up and hugs me so hard it hurts but I don't mind because I know she needs it.
Lyndsey is my best friend. I've known her since the second grade. She's been there for me through everything, literally. She's mixed with white from her mom and black from her son-of-a-bitch, no good father who's never stuck around. She's a little taller than me at 5'8 and has very curly hair. She has brown eyes but at that very moment they seemed black and empty. Her smile is absolutely stunning thanks to braces but she wasn't showing it.
"What's wrong?"
"I-it's my d-dad..." she says in between tears falling down her beautiful, glowing, acne-free skin. I wipe the visible tears and take her up to my room. She sits on my bed and I sit next to her with my arm around her in my attempt to comfort her.
"Start from the beginning. I'm not leaving any time soon." I said wiping yet another tear from her angelic face.
"H-he came to the house. I-it was the first time I've seen him in I don't know how long," she's still having trouble talking from her panic and meltdown. "He threatened my mom and he took everything. My phone. My MacBook. My Apple Watch. Every sort of communication I have he just took it. That's why I didn't tell you I was coming over. He was raging with anger and I have no idea why. He just came in demanding for my shit then left. Mom called the cops and they're trying to find him right now but we don't know what car he was driving so it's going to take a while."
"Did he take anything else other than those three things?"
"He tried to take my car keys but mom convinced him not to and to just leave."
"Oh hell no Lynds. Don't let him take your jeep." I tried to make her laugh.
A little chuckle came out but that was followed by more tears. I wiped them and gave her a really tight hug.
"Is mom okay? He didn't hurt anyone did he?"
"No, no one was hurt just scared."
I nodded in relief and I just watched her. I could tell she was reliving it all over again just by the look in her eyes.
"I'll be right back." I get up and get my phone out my car. I see that Caylen texted me:
Hey
I rolled my eyes knowing she was still upset about last night. I locked my phone and ignored her message, knowing Lyndsey was my priority at the moment. I walk back up to my room. Lyndsey is still sitting on my bed. I unlock my phone and open the Spotify app. Lyndsey helped me through a very depressing time in my life and she would always play a specific song to make me feel better. The song was actually the start of her calling me 'Sunshine' and her 'fallen angel' . I scrolled trying to find it and when I finally did I clicked on it.
Sunshine by Jake Miller
When the song started I looked up at her and I saw her mouthing the words to the song. I smiled knowing she was a little better. At least good enough to enjoy our song.
You're my fallen angel
Why'd you go away?
You're my fallen angel
But I'll see you again someday
And we will fly high, oh
Yeah, fly high, oh
TogetherI hummed along to the chorus and she continued you mouth the lyrics. She leaned her head back and shut her eyes slowly. I sat back down next to her and wrapped my arm around her. She leaned on me with her head on my shoulder. After the outro to the song ended I had an idea.
"Hey Lynds,"
"Yeah?"
"Still want those matching tattoos?" I smiled big at the thought of finally getting the one thing we dreamed of for many many years.
She raised her head "Yeah? Why?"
I let her brain process what I was inferring and her face lit up.
"You down?"
She nods so quickly I grab her head and hold it steady. "Woah dude. Don't give yourself whiplash."
We both giggle and we get in the car. We figure out where we are going to get them done. I switch my car into reverse and back out of the driveway. I'm switching my car back to drive when I feel Lyndsey's hand cover mine on the gear shift. I stop and look at her giving her a sweet smile as if to give her comfort and reassurance. After I started driving to the tattoo parlor, I grabbed her hand and held it in my own. I brushed my thumb gently along her hand.
"You'll be okay kid." I say then kiss her hand.
