First Day

Charlie sat alone at the Gryffindor table. She'd only made one friend so far, Poppy Riddle, and she'd got Sorted into Slytherin, which Charlie just called bad luck. The only person she knew in Gryffindor was Tris, and Charlie wasn't about to talk to her. She attacked her cereal fiercely with her spoon, cursing her life.
"What did the cereal ever do to you?" came a bright voice from behind Charlie. Charlie turned round with a ferocious scowl, but the red-headed girl didn't seem fazed.
"Can I sit here?" the girl asked. Without waiting for an answer, he sat beside Charlie. "I'm Lily, by the way, Lily Evans."
Charlie held out her hand, her scowl fading slightly.
"Charlie Fawkes." Charlie sighed.
Lily smiled happily, but her eyes were shadowed with some darker emotion. Charlie was learning Legilimency but it didn't come easy to her - unlike Poppy. She tried to look into Lily's mind, but all she got was a feeling of hatred. She concentrated harder and two faces swam into view - James Potter and Tris Riddle. Charlie jerked back, gasping. It was the first time she'd ever gotten a definite image in her mind when she'd done Legilimency. Lily was looking at her with concern.
"Charlie? Are you okay?" Lily questioned anxiously.
Charlie nodded, too euphoric to speak.
"You hate them," she managed to say, "You hate Potter and Trissa Riddle. Same as me."
Lily's eyes lit up.
"Potter's an arrogant toe-rag, and something about that Tris Riddle just makes my toes curl." Lily said eagerly. "Come on, we need to get revenge somehow."
They two thought for a moment. Charlie had only known the Marauders and Tris for all of two minutes, yet she felt like she knew all their weaknesses. Tris had a thing for Sirius - that much was obvious. James would do anything for Sirius. The pieces slotted together in Charlie's mind all at once.
"Does Sirius play Quidditch?" Charlie asked.
Lily looked bewildered by such a bizarre question, but nodded all the same.
"Does James play too?" Charlie quizzed Lily.
Lily nodded again, her expression growing more confused.
"We'll jinx Sirius' broom!" Charlie said triumphantly. "When they're doing Quidditch practice. Tris will go to support Sirius and James'll be there anyway, so we'll jinx Sirius' broom. Don't hurt him, just give him - and them a fright."
Lily broke into a devious grin.

With the Slytherins

"What do you think of the dorm, Poppy?" Bellatrix asked Poppy, sitting down beside her at the Slytherin table. Poppy just nodded absentmindedly. It was just her luck to be Sorted into Slytherin, away from her friends. Sure, Tris might be a bit boy-crazy but they'd grown up together. Her newfound friends, Charlie and Lily, seemed a lot nicer than all the grovelling Slytherins - well apart from Bellatrix and Lucius Malfoy. Those two were the only Slytherins who she could have a decent conversation with.
"Hey Bella," Poppy said, suddenly thinking of a way to get dirt on Sirius without having to be anywhere near him. "What's up with Sirius Black?"
Lucius Malfoy, who'd come into the hall unnoticed and sat down beside Bellatrix, sniffed snobbishly.
"That bloodtraitor," Lucius said, "isn't worth the ground he walks on."
Poppy sighed. Clearly she wasn't going to get anything on Sirius from Lucius. She opened her mouth to ask Bellatrix again, but was cut off by Slughorn cheerfully saying: "Schedules!" and handing the three Slytherins their schedules.
Poppy looked at hers and her heart leapt.
"Ugh!" Lucius complained loudly, "We have every lesson with the Gryffindors!"
Bellatrix scowled. Poppy chewed her lip anxiously as she wondered if she could manage to sit next to Charlie or Lily without it seeming purposeful.
"It's okay, Poppy," Bellatrix reassured her, clearly thinking she was annoyed about having lessons with the Gryffindors, "You have every lesson with either Lucius or I, you won't need to go anywhere near those Gryffindors."
Poppy gave Bellatrix a weak smile. There was a sudden loud bang from the doors of the hall. Everyone turned to look as a firework exploded just inside the hall, spelling out the letter Μ.
"It's those damned Marauders again," Lucius grumbled.
What Lucius said was true, because as the smoke cleared, the Marauders strutted through the doors and with them was Tris.
