"SO ARE WE TALKING GIRL-NEXT-DOOR ROMANCE NOVEL, OR A CLICHÉ ALONG THE LINES OF 'NO STRINGS ATTACHED?'"

          "Excuse me?"

Fang shrugged. "You heard me. Is this 'Betty' a fling or something more? From what you're telling me, it sounds like she loves you but you don't feel the same. Seems a bit like you're leading her on if you ask me."

Adalia bit her cheek, avoiding his penetrating gaze to think about his words. It was a no-brainer that, after all her years chasing after doe-eyed girls and breaking the hearts of a multitude of boys, she was beginning to feel like there was something missing in her life. Be it true romance or a functional set of friendships, something was wrong here.

It was up to her to pick up the broken pieces of her outer shell and decide what she was going to do with them: throw them away, or glue them back together.

Fortunately — yet unfortunately all the same — she chose the former option.

"I don't know if I love her," she admitted, pressing her lips tightly together. "I know that I like her, though. A lot. I don't know . . . it's—"

"—complicated?" he offered, receiving a sheepish smile as a response. He chuckled. "Yeah, I've heard that all before. You know, are you even sure you're into girls?"

She furrowed her brows. "I've always been into girls."

He raised a brow, which faintly reminded her of Ingrid. "That doesn't answer my question. Ingrid tells me you've been out of the closet for as long as you can remember but, for some reason, I felt that how you acted towards Betty the day of the Variety Show didn't reflect off that."

Adalia was speechless. No one had ever challenged any part of her identity before. In fact, it created a bigger crisis for her as a self-proclaimed 'queer' girl as opposed to how she had felt a hurricane rip through her body when she identified as straight. It made her scared — terrified, actually — to think of the possibilities that could arise by his commentary.

(Was he right? Was Adalia never truly one for girls, as she had been so determined to prove?)

"I've never had someone ask me that before," she began, her mind completely blank and heart in her hands. She began to tap her fingers against her thigh, bringing Fang's attention to them almost immediately. "Betty was my first friend after Cheryl; my second girlfriend after Ingrid and I tried to make it work in the seventh grade. And I don't . . . well, I've never had a boyfriend before. Honestly, the only time I even kissed a guy was to get Betty's attention."
