"Please George?" You pleaded.
He sighed, "(Y/N), it's not that big of a deal. No one is going to notice."
"It is a big deal, George!" You rolled your eyes as you tugged on his sleeve. "I don't want to go to a big party and not know how to dance. It's embarrassing and people will notice, especially since I'm gonna be seen with you."
He took a deep breath and pinched his nose, "Fine, if it'll make you shut up."
You slapped him on the arm and led him to an open space George's living room, eager for him to start his lesson.
"Alright, Mr. President," You smirked. "Show me what to do."
He rolled his eyes fondly and bowed while you curtsied at him. He stepped forward and grabbed your arms to place them in the correct position.
"Now I know we don't have any music at the moment, but we'll just use our imagination," He said as he started to sway you around the room. "Just follow my lead, (Y/N) and keep your eyes on me."
You did as you were told but still was slightly out of rhythm. George noticed and chuckled a bit.
"Don't make fun of me," You grumbled. "It's my first time."
He shook his head and laughed at your pout, "And you're doing just fine. Don't worry and keep your eyes on me."
You sighed and continued to let George to lead you through your music-less dance.
You were getting the hang of it after a while, but you were so lost in thought that you accidentally stepped on his foot.
"Oh my goodness I am so sorry! Are you alright, George?" You asked, peering back and forth from his face to his foot.
"I am fine, (Y/N). Just keep dancing." He said with a grimace.
You giggled a bit at his face and he furrowed his eyebrows.
"Is my pain funny to you, Miss (L/N)?" He said with a quirked eyebrow.
"Well I just think it's quite amusing that the famous General Washington can be brought down by a single woman stepping on his foot." You laughed and he chuckled with you.
"Well it wasn't just any woman who stepped on my foot," He said as he spun you. "It was (Y/N) (L/N), the woman whose beauty and charm has completely enchanted me. I wish her to be mine, but I do not deserve her."
You nearly stumbled as you were caught off guard by his statement. You have known George ever since you were young, the two of you grew up together. Throughout your life, you've always had a teasing relationship, where the two of you would banter and debate until one of you could talk no more. You've always been attracted to him, yes, how could you not be? But you always believed he thought of you as a sister and nothing more. However, this sentence changed everything.
"George," You said softly, but he just shook his head with a sad smile and continued dancing.
With the newly found silence, the air had changed from a calm and friendly presence to a tense and electrically charged atmosphere.
You wanted to say something, anything, but you just couldn't get a word out of your mouth. Your mind was buzzing with thoughts such as He likes you back! Your feelings aren't one sided! Go get him!
Even though there was no music, you could feel that the dance was coming to an end and your heart dropped to your stomach, knowing that you were losing your chance.
Then George surprised you by pulling you close, closer than he has ever been and dipped you slowly, making your legs feel like jelly. His hands were tight around your waist and his nose was brushing against yours. Your foreheads were touching as both of you were staring deeply at the others eyes, fervently looking for any glimpse that the other wanted this too. You caught his eyes flickering down to your lips and you gasped, desperately wishing and hoping he would do the thing you've been dreaming of for years. He lips brushed against yours and you felt you eyelids flutter close at the sensation.
"Sir," you quickly jumped out of his grasp as you heard Alexander walk in. "We need your assistance in the meeting room."
You blushed and stared at your shoes and out of the corner of your eye you noticed that George was trying to regain his composure.
Alexander took in the scene and stiffened, "Did-did I interrupt anything?"
George cleared his throat and shook his head, "It was nothing important, Alexander. I'll come right away, just let me gather my stuff."
Alex nodded, not believing his words, but didn't question it and walked out the door.
You, however, were gripping your skirts and trying not to sob.
"Nothing important?" You cried. "That was nothing important, George?"
George ignored you and slung on his coat, "Have you seen my hat, (Y/N)?"
Your body was fueled with anger at his question. What happened? Did he not like you? Was it just the heat of the moment?
"Oh we're just going to pretend that nothing happened? That nothing changed between us in that moment?" You yelled.
George continued to pretend as if he didn't hear you as he found his hat and started to walk towards the door. He opened it and was about to leave you alone until you asked him a question that stopped him.
"Was it a mistake?" You demanded with angry tears rolling down your face.
You saw George's hand grip the door knob tightly as he took in a deep breath. He turned his head slightly, but you still couldn't fully see his face.
Your body froze, awaiting for his answer. You heart was pounding and you could barely see his figure through your tears.
"I hope to see you at the party tonight." And with that he shut the door and walked away from you, leaving your question unanswered and your heart utterly empty.
