Football tryouts were normal, but I was off my game today. Coach Burke even pulled me aside to ask if I was feeling okay. I told him I was really tired, but the real reason was that I could see Ryan at soccer tryouts from the football field and I wanted to watch. He seemed nervous about them for some reason. I was missing easy plays, didn't catch the ball as often as I should have, and just all around sucked.
When coach dismisses practice, I turn towards the soccer field, and see Ryan walking towards the goal post. It was his turn to try out for goalie. I run as close to the field as I can get without him spotting me, and watch. A ball sailed to the right of him, and he caught it. One sailed way above his head, and I didn't think he would catch it. Rosie walked up to me and started to say something, but I told her to shut up and watch. He jumped and caught the ball. Another soared to the very left of the goal post, and he jumped to the side and caught that too. The only one he missed was one that looked like it soared beyond the net, but just barely got in.
He looked exhausted. He dropped his gloved hands to his knees and breathed heavily. Tyler went over to him, and gave him a water bottle, which Ryan graciously accepted. Tyler patted him on the back as he stood up straight and walked over to their coach who had started talking to the team. Rosie and I walked up to the door that lead to the locker rooms, and waited on Ryan. Ryan was taking his goalie gloves off as he walked up to the locker rooms. He was dripping sweat. His hair was matted to the side of his head, and his soccer jersey stuck to him.
We talked a little bit before he got his things, and then he drove us home. He went back to his house to go get his things for staying the night at my house.
"Hey guys!" My dad says as Rosie and I walk through the door, "How was the first day?"
Rosie starts a long conversation with my dad about her first day of high school, and I was for once grateful for that. It meant he wasn't asking me about football. When Ryan walked in, my dad greeted him, and then we went to my room. I went to shower and the entire time the only thing I thought of was how happy Ryan looked at soccer tryouts. That really is where he belongs. He seemed upset all day, but the second he stepped onto the field he seemed like a whole new person. It made me smile.
I got out of the shower still smiling, and wrap a towel around my waist. I walk back to my bedroom, and see Ryan looking over some of the papers we got in school today. He looks up at me, but quickly looks back down. I see a slight blush rising on his cheeks. I quickly put on some boxers, basketball shorts, and a t-shirt. For some reason I felt awkwardly exposed to him while I was in a towel. That never normally happens.
I sit down next to him in my bed, and peer over his shoulder. He was filling out one of those stupid "Get to know you" papers teachers always give on the first day. He seemed to be stuck on one.
"What's my favorite TV show?" Ryan asked me.
I thought for a moment, "The Flash."
He wrote it down and pondered the next question, "Wow. I don't think I have a favorite sport," he jokes, " I don't keep up on them often."
I laugh, "Yeah, I don't either. Just put soccer. All guys who play soccer have nice butts."
He laughs while he writes down soccer. He looks up at me still laughing.
"You think I have a nice ass? I'm flattered!" He said.
"Of course it's nice! I mean look at it!" I say and completely flip him over onto his stomach. I smack his butt and he squirms away from me. We then begin to wrestle on my bed like we're five years old, which we basically are. We both sit back on my bed, breathless and laughing so hard that we can't even begin to catch our breaths.
