CHOICES

Mason

For half an hour, I sat without saying a word and listened to Eden's story about what transpired since she was taken. How she found out Artemis was her aunt and how she was some sort of demigoddess and that I was her protector, which I admitted to myself kind of made sense.

And for half an hour, I listened and couldn't for the life of me understand where she came to the absolutely stupid realization that she should die.

"So don't you agree Mason? It's way to dangerous of a risk. It only makes sense for you to kill me." Leaning back onto the couch, I gave her a deadpan stare.

"Why?" She looked confused, unable to comprehend my question.

" Why what?"

"Why must you die? If it truly is a risk, we'll just have to resort to the old ways of abortion." A sickened look flitted past her features and with a quick motion, she was off the couch and pacing.

"You think I would be able to kill my own child?! What do you think I am, some kind of murderer!?" Her chest was heaving as she shouted and I couldn't get in a single word before she of course, jumped to conclusions.

"You think of me like everyone else don't you? You think I'm a monster because of what I did to my mom." Barely a whisper was the words but it was like she was screaming them at me with white hot accusations.

"Whoa now Eden, that's going too damn far. I've never accused nor blamed you for what happened with your mom. Don't you dare group me together with everyone who turned their back on you! I've always been on your side, don't you forget that in your confused ass mind state!" Backing down with a slightly guilty face, Eden sat down and sighed, a weary sound yet she seemed still on edge.

"I'm sorry Mason, I didn't mean that. This is just too much, when did life become so complicated?"

"When you met that sorry ass wolf." She stiffened up, casting her gaze to the ground with an audible sigh.

" I honestly don't like how easy it was for my heart to be changed. I always wanted someone to love me but I wanted to cherish the time it took to get there, not have some quick satisfaction. This whole soulmate thing is ridiculous." Silence edged its way into the room and left us reeling inside our own thoughts. She was confused and scared right now, so I wouldn't push my own opinion of her and Laurent's fucked up "soul mating" business onto her at the moment.

Memories of last night forced themselves to reemerge into my mind like a slap to the face and that was enough for me to want to leave this place forever and burn it to the ground, it was tainted and ruined. Standing up and gathering Eden's hand into my own, I escorted her to the door.

"We will figure it out Eden, don't worry." I should've known I couldn't have been more wrong.

"So this is the Oracle huh? Nice joint I suppose, bit flashy for my tastes."

We stood at the entrance to a dense corpse of trees and right in the center was a shimmering door of sorts. Except it wasn't really a door as it was like magic in a physical shape. A strange emotion flitted in the back of my mind at the image before me but I paid it no heed, it was of little importance.

A small hand entwined with my own and I cast a side glance to see the corner of Chi's lips lift.

"It's not that bad once you go inside, after all, who hasn't dream of seeing the Divine Life? The very Eden that Artemis created for her loyal subjects."

Sharp irregular sparks of pain shot through my nerves at the sound of Edens name coming from Chi's mouth but I bit it down, no use to cry over something I did.

"Well, what are we waiting for then?" Chi's hand intertwined with my own and she pulled me forward, and we didn't look back.
