Consequences Are Inevitable

Mason

"I wonder how long we've been walking." Eden mumbled to herself, no doubt not expecting an answer from me. Since she hadn't gotten one in the past three hours after leaving behind the cabin. I continuously sniffed the air for signs of the others but it was almost as though the woods themselves overpowered their scents.

Odd.

"Mason, I'm sorry." The sudden apology caught me off guard and I stumbled over the exposed root of the nearby tree, cursing under my breath.

"Sorry for what?" Granting her a passing glance, I saw an assortment of emotions work themselves out on her face.

"Everything." She sounded so dejected and the inner love I've always carried inside me nearly forced me to stop and comfort her but I pressed it down.

"We've all made....questionable decisions Eden, at least, yours weren't completely your fault." She bit her bottom lip and wrung her hands together.

"I let it all get the best of me, I let her inside my head with the false promises of a family long gone and she won. If I'm pregnant, it could mean disaster, it could mean a calamity. She says it can bring back the dead but what if it's not my mom she's trying to bring back but someone dark and cold." Silent tears fell down and everything was silent.

"I wouldn't be able to bear being the reason for such a thing again Mason, my mom was enough." I don't know why but anger arose in me, creeping its way up my throat until my voice went cold.

"Eden, how long will you use your mothers death as a way to deflect the consequences of your bad decisions?" She gasped painfully, the tears multiplied and her body shook.

"Is that what you think I do?"

"Isn't it?"

Standing stock still, Eden went completely mute and wiped her tears away. "I see."

Nothing else was said until we finally made it to an opening where three others were waiting with differencing expressions.

"Eden!"

"Alpha."

"Hmph, took y'all long enough."

I didn't respond, just kept walking while throwing back a simple sentence.
"Let's go."
