lol when she said that line it reminded me of being in like french class and only knowing partially how to say what i wanted in french so just awkwardly slipping in some english and hoping the teacher wouldn't notice

alright so in this chapter i'm going to do my best at showing you how to write names in trigedasleng. just saying i'm no expert so bare with me lol.

first i'll give you guys a list of vowel sounds: (so on the left is the letter and on the right is a word where it shows what it sounds like)

A,a = apple (or sofa but only if 'a' is the last letter of the word)

Ai = bite

Au = cow

E, e = get

Ei = eight

I, i = kid or machine

O, o = law or son

Ou = wrote

U, u = rude

☞ the rest of the alphabet is pretty much the same, except trigedasleng doesn't use the letters C, Q, or X. (their language is all about simplicity. why have a C or a Q when they both make the same sound pretty much as a K? why have an X when it makes the same sound pretty much as 'SK'?)

☞ in trigedasleng names aren't 'translated', they're just 'transcribed'. you pronounce them the exact same way as in english. names are typically written out phonetically, or in other words how they're  'sounded out'.

☞ when writing in trigedasleng, it is the author/speaker's decision whether to use respelled names or to use modern english spellings. because of trigedasleng's descent from american english and the romanization system devised for the language, many names are spelled identically or nearly-identically either way.

☞ here's some examples from the show:

Bellamy = Belomi (ie, if you pronounced his nome phonetically when it's spelled the english way it looks like "bella-my" as in the english possessive pronoun "my" which obvs isn't how it's actually pronounced. also you drop the extra L bc its irrelevant & useless lol.)

Lexa = Leksa (ie, drop the X and replace with 'KS', because trigedasleng alphabet doesn't have X's)

Clarke = Klark (ie, drop the C and replace with K because trigedalseng doesn't use C's, and drop the E at the end because it's silent and doesn't really do anything)

Lincoln = Linkon (ie, drop the C and replace it with K, then drop the L because it's silent and doesn't do anything)

☞ in trigedasleng surnames aren't a thing, instead you insert where you're from. so for example it wouldn't be "Bellamy Blake" it would be "Belomi kom Skaikru".

☞ writing your OC's name:

- remember, some names are simple enough that they don't necessarily NEED to be translated.

- also your characters name only really needs to be spelled in trigedasleng if it's in a sentence that's written in trigedasleng.

☞  okay, let's use my OC, Hazel, as an example:

- i'm no expert but i'm pretty sure her name would be transcribed as "Heizel". (then since she's from the Ark it would be "Heizel kom Skaikru...")

- if she was talking to a grounder, let's say Lincoln, and he was speaking english, it would simply look like this: "Hazel, your fight is over"

- but, if he was speaking to her in trigedasleng it would look like this: "Heizel, nou gonplei ste odon"

- i guess what i'm just trying to say is just because your OC's name is translated into trigedasleng doesn't mean any time a grounder is speaking to them you have to translate their name. because if the gounder is speaking english then you would just spell it the english way.
