CHARACTER ARCS.

"i love earth." - jasper jordan

so you have your OC. you've decided what they look like, their name, their plot, their history etc etc etc. NOW WHAT!? you need to figure out your character's arc/development/evolution.

character evolution is at the heart of any good story. whether it's the protagonist doing the changing, or whether they're changing the world around them, character arcs are ultimately the whole point of any type fiction.

so you're probably sitting there thinking, okay but wtf is a character arc?!?!? bc that's exactly what i thought. so i researched it a bit. and basically its:

1. your main character starts out the story one way
2. your main character learns some lessons throughout the story
3. your protagonist ends in a different place.

*one important thing to remember is that your character could have a positive, or negative arc.*

2 TYPES OF ARC: character & goal:

character arc: can be positive for negative. for example let's say you're writing about a delinquent who is dropped to earth. they could start out sweet, naive and innocent. the only reason they were locked up is because they were framed for a crime, or know something the council wants them to keep quiet about etc. when they get to earth they have to witness terrible things that make them into a cold hearted killer (cough octavia or clarke). OR you could take it in the opposite direction. your character was put in lock up because they murdered someone. they arrive on earth without any friends. they quickly have to learn that they won't survive earth alone and slowly have to let other people into their heart. eventually they turn out a better person than before (cough bellamy or murphy). (obviously you could mix things up a bit, you don't have to follow one of these exact scenarios, they're just examples!)

goal arc: could be positive or negative. for example, your character is a grounder, specifically anya's second. first what they want is to make peace with the sky people after being sent on a mission to scout out the fallen drop ship. they can't reach their goal because anya does not allow it. your character risks their life to disobey the authority, adventuring on several missions to achieve their goal. near the end of the book the goal is achieved, and a new trial is introduced if you plan on writing a second book. OR you could take it in the opposite direction. your character has noting but hatred for the intruders who landed on earth. multiple times they try to kill them, threatening the lives of the delinquents. they never succeed because they are stopped by their best friend lincoln. when they realize their goal is unachievable they change their mind and try to see the sky people through new eyes...etc etc etc
