Jennifire didn't understand anything that was going on. Jesse's grandparents were stumbling out of the cave. And a thousand questions were running through her head. How and why did they follow us? Were they here before us? "What are they saying?" she questioned aloud. That wasn't purposely, but it was answered anyway.
"Run!" Jesse's grandparents said together. Before the girls could even process what they had said, the ground began to shake as the dragon broke through the mountain.Jennifire was to scared to scream or move, or do anything. Luckily Holly pulled her away. And just in time, too. The dragon roared at a earsplitting sound. Then it shot something out of its mouth, right where Jennifire was standing a moment before. Inches in front of her face was a ten foot long spike of ice, embedded in the ground. That made Jennifire want to run away screaming for sure. And she started doing so with Holly. But she was stopped when she heard Holly calling out to Jesse.
"Jesse come on! Get away from there before you get hurt again!"Jesse stopped running to turn back and help her grandparents. They were all she had left, and she couldn't leave them. She ignored Holly's pleading voice behind her as she ran toward the cave. The dragon was really irritated by having intruders and was shooting ice spikes everywhere. Jesse ran up to her grandmother and helped pull her up from where she had fallen. She made sure her grandfather was right next to her as she started to slowly trudge through the snow to Holly and Jennifire hiding in the trees up ahead. They almost made it when Jesse's grandfather pushed Jesse and her grandmother over and jumped over them. Jesse turned over from where she was lying to see her grandfather slowly turning to ice, and the dragon was spewing what looked like an ice storm out of its mouth, aiming directly at her grandfather was standing. Before Jesse could react to what was happening, her grandmother jumped up to protect Jesse, who was obviously the dragons next victim, as he turned his head slightly to where she was lying on the ground. The dragon seemed satisfied after a while, and lay down on the ground until he saw anymore suspicious by standers.
Jesse stared in disbelief at her grandparents. They had both been completely frozen over just to save her. She walked up to the front of them, and noticed that the had been holding hands in there last moments. She started sobbing while trying to hug them both. "We can try to thaw them," Holly suggested. "It has to work because I saw them frozen earlier." Jesse didn't answer, she just kept crying. Her last family had died to save her, and once again, she was present to see it all. Flashbacks flooded her mind of her father being killed. He was so close to her. If she were only a little closer...
"Jesse?" Holly questioned, gently touching her friends shoulder.
"Just go away!" Jesse screamed, pounding her fist on her grandparents clasped hands. Too late did she realized what she had done as her grandparents shattered to the ground in what seemed like a million pieces. Jesse fell to her knees, but this time she didn't start crying again. She was full of anger and rage. She failed again to save her loved ones again. But she also felt something else, something that ignited her anger more than anything. Then, before she could get up, the bits and pieces of her grandparents began to swirl together and rose into the air. They glowed and mixed as if creating something new. The light was now intensifying, and was temporarily blinding even Jennifire, who was still back in the trees. When the light died down, a simple heart shape was floating in the air, and it looked much like a necklace.
"All that wizz-ka-magical light stuff made an ice heart... necklace?" Jennifire said to the girls after she hesitantly walked up to them. She was answered with a long moment of silence. "Well we sure have had a lot of awkward silences today, haven't we?" She laughed.Jesse just stared at the... the... the ice heart. Her grandparents were now a heart necklace. She wanted to scream. She felt so stupid to think that today would be a great adventure. It turned out to be a horrible, horrible day. Her life was officially ruined. She didn't know what to do. She couldn't return home and just, live there. Shed probably just stay with Holly and Jennifire. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas loved Jesse as if she were family. Jesse's mind started to pound. She couldn't think straight. She felt something hit her before her whole world went black, and she wouldn't be waking up for a while.
Holly panicked, seeing Jesse on the ground. The Ice Heart had flown over to Jesse and wrapped it's self around her neck. Holly tried desperately to wake her up, then tried to take the necklace off. Neither worked.
"What do we do?" Holly sighed. A lot had just happened, and it happened to quickly. She couldn't process it all. But she did know that the dragon was being controlled somewhere else, and she had to find that person.
"Maybe we can drag her home? Or you can use your-"
"No! Jennifire, I'm not using them ever again." Holly said, avoiding her sisters eyes.
"OK fine then," Jennifire said, looking toward the mountain. "That horrible thing. Killing people for... For... What's the point of it all anyways?"
"What do you mean 'What's the point of it all'?" Holly questioned.
Jennifire sat up. "I mean, if that thing is really a machine, why was it made. What's the point of it? Why is it here?"
Holly slowly turned to look at her sister. Jennifire had a huge grin on her face, like she was excited that she thought of that.
"Your right. Let's go home and talk to mom and dad about this." Holly said, standing up and trying to pick Jesse up with her. Jennifire stood as well, and picked Jesse's feet up and the girls were heading back the way they came. But the ice dragon had other ideas.
