Chapter 6

(Jazzie)

"OKAY, ONE, TWO, THREE, CLEAR! WE GOT A PULSE. NOW TAKE HER BLOOD, TEST FOR STDs, PREGNANCY, AND GET A CAT SCAN AND PET SCAN, TAKE UPSTAIRS STAT" I said to the other nurses. One of my nurses then pointed to redness and marks on her body. She was also bruised badly on different parts of her body and on her thighs. I ordered a rape kit to be done for her as well a test for chicken pox. With that being said I went back to my office and I went to go pull up her medical records. When I did I couldn't believe what I saw. After a while of that and learning about her health history I went back to Courage and most of her lab results were done. I ended up calling Jo into my office to talk about her privately. She was anxious and I asked did she want the good or bad news first. She took a moment to respond and I let her know she's pregnant and eight weeks along. She smiled then I let out a sigh. I don't know if it's a good thing. She has been in and out the hospital since her pre-teen years. Some broken bones, fractured ribs, and serious vaginal and anal tearing. When it is time for the baby to come she will to have a C-section because of the years of trauma down there" I said fighting back tears. All Jo could say was wow and I let her know there's more. She has been abusing drugs for quite sometime as well as alcohol. She has coke in her system and her BAC is through the roof. To top it off she also has chicken pox." Jo had nothing to say. We were both speechless. The fact she was alert but intoxicated and functioning like she was sober is crazy to me. But I been in the middle field since high school. Despite my shitty childhood I took college courses in high school and graduated with my degree and high school diploma on top of graduating at sixteen. I needed to work hard to get away from my family. Now I'm the head nurse in charge and I do almost everything you can think of. I've seen a lot so seeing a fully functioning junkie is nothing new but its still crazy to me. It's crazy after everything Courage body been through she's still alive. Anyways, With that being said, Jo and I  talked a little longer about us and she caught me by surprise when she gently kissed me. That made me smile from ear to ear then I was told her PET and CAT scan came back but it was different. Her brain showed the areas that were more different than others and consistent with someone that has bipolar disorder and PTSD. With that being said we made our way to her room and we seen she was a awake when I got there. "WHY AM I SO FUCKING ITCHY" Courage shouted as she scratched. I then got close and grabbed her hands. I told her stop scratching and she has chicken pox. For a moment she stared into my eyes and I saw how sad and in pain she looked. I looked at her with love and I so badly wanted to hug her and let her know she's safe now. "I'm not gay" said Courage with an attitude. "Denial is a river in Egypt and Jo is my girlfriend" I responded with a serious expression. She looked sad again then I let her know I'm nurse Jazzie Price and I was here for whatever she needed and I told her she's safe. I then told her Jo needed to confess something. "We're half sister's; we have the same dad. I searched years for you but the day I saw you at the bus stop I wasn't looking. I walk past my dads house after hard days at work or when I lose a case. But I also need to ask, has your mom been abusing you sexually, physically, and mentally?" said Jo. Courage look down and said all the above. "I'm going to keep you a few days. I need to run more test and keep an eye on you and your baby" I said. She began shouting that she couldn't be pregnant and said they raped her. She was screaming and yelling and she picked up the lamp on the side table and through it across the room. Happily it missed and I don't think she intended to throw it at someone. I tried to calm her down but she was not listening. I had no choice. I called for other nurses. Jo and the nurses held her down and I told her everything will be okay. I put the needle in her neck and the medication instantly kicked in. She was calm and went to sleep. I then instructed the nurses to give her medication for her chicken pox and I went to my office and took a breath.
