Chapter 19

(Jazzie)

I was happy one of my male coworkers agreed to be a donor. He's my partner and crime here and when I'm not working he's taking over most of the time. He's gay as well and him and his husband don't want children so he was happy donate. I gave him a cup so he could go make his deposit. I then went to the waiting room and looked at the list for the next patient. That's when I seen Joanna was next. Robin was with a different patient so I  sucked my teeth and called her name. I did the usual routine of taking her weight and blood pressure and temperature then I asked her why she's here. "My stomach has been killing me on and off since yesterday but the cramps are getting more intense within this last hour. I've also been constipated for a week now. Am I going to die full of shit" Joanna said. "Not literally but figuratively you are full of shit" I said annoyed. She gave me an angry look and then I told her that her blood pressure is a little high but everything is normal. I touched her stomach and it felt hard. I was thinking she was in labor and I gave her a cup to pee in. On her way out of the room she fell to her knees holding her stomach. She started crying in pain and a stretcher came her way. We took her into the ICU and I did a quick sonogram of her stomach and pelvis area. My suspicion was right, she's in active labor. She looked surprised at the news. "What the fuck you mean I'm in labor. How the fuck I got pregnant?" She said. "Well you're a sugar baby aren't you. I see we don't know how sex works" I said. "Look I know you're mad at me and you have every right to be but I cannot take your sly remarks right now" she said. I told her she was right and I asked about her menstrual cycle. She explained its always been irregular because she has kidney stones. I helped her breath through another contraction then I helped her change and I checked her cervix. She was dilated six centimeters and I let her know we're keeping her here. She has been in labor for a little over twenty four hours now. She then asked me to get something for the pain. Once she got the epidural she went to sleep. I then found Robin and told her keep her company while I went to the waiting room. I seen it was packed with people. That's when victims of a terrible car accident came in along with a bunch of teenagers from a party that overdose on drugs and alcohol. I then went back to my office and called a few of the staff members. I need all the help I can get tonight. After that I called up Courage. I let her Joanna is here in labor and they needed to talk. I hung up the phone and then I went to the waiting room. I called another patient and after I was finished with him I went back to check on Joanna. When I got there she told me her mouth was dry. I told her she can't eat or drink during labor. I gave her some ice chips and she said the epidural wasn't working. I checked her belly again and informed her she was having a girl. I also told her I told Courage and she didn't mind. A half hour later she came in the delivery room. I gave them their space to talk and I went back to the waiting room. A middle aged women started complaining she didn't want to wait. She explained her chest was hurting  and she found a lump on her breast. She attempted to pull it out and show me and I told her not yet. I told her come with me and then I had the front desk page Robin to call another patient. I heard a bunch of people suck their teeth as I walked off and I took the lady to another room. After running a few test I found out she has breast cancer. I told her the bad news and held her head down as she cried. I then had one of my staff members take her to a different part of the hospital that deals with cancer patients. After that I went back to check on Joanna and her and Courage were laughing and talking. I then checked her cervix again and I broke her water. Another two hours went by and she was ready to push. I called Robin and my other best doctor into the delivery room with me. After a half hour of pushing and her screaming her lungs out. She finally gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. A few minutes later I took her to her room and let her hold her baby for a while. I then went to my office to breathe and take a break.
