Happy but Broken

"Jackie, come on, we are going to be late for school." My best friend that goes by the name of Shawn Mendes complained.

I finished tying my shoes and walked slower than I usually do to get on Shawn's nerves.

"Your really annoying." He pointed out.

"Awe! Thanks Shawn, I try." I patted myself where my heart was and continued to walk slower.

"That's it." Shawn murmured. Before I could reply he picked me up, swung me over his shoulders and started sprinting to school.

"Shawn put me down!" I exclaimed as he began to run faster.

"We are going to be late." He glared at me.

What the heck, I don't have to use my legs to walk right now! I went on my phone and listened to music.

"You can unplug your earbuds, we are here now." He set me down, nearby my locker as I stuffed my phone into my pocket.

Just as I was going to say something, Laur jumped on Shawn giving him a long kiss.

You see, I secretly liked Shawn, but I didn't want to say anything because it was going to ruin our friendship. We have been friends since Kindergarten. Also if he is happy, I am happy.

I walked to my locker to grab my books for English when my other best friend Delilah hugged me.

"I see medusa has Shawn as victim." She whispered so only I could hear.

"Well Shawn belongs to medusa." I pointed out. Delilah is the only one that knows I have a crush on Shawn.

"So.... I was talking to your mom about your birthday this Saturday and we want to throw you a party." Delilah says as I shut my locker door.

"Look, I don't want anything too big, I'm honestly just fine with my parents, you and Shawn having a get together, that's all." I replied walking slow.

"Okay, whatever the birthday girl wants." I smiled at her then headed over to class.

(The next day)
Shawn and I were currently walking to school when I decided to bring up my birthday.

"So I was thinking-
"So Laur is hav-

"You go first Shawn." I smiled.

"Okay, So Laur is having her birthday party this Saturday and she said I could invite a friend to tag along and I was thinking about you." He said. My heart shattered.

"Why?" I ask hoping he would say because it was my birthday too and he wanted me too have fun with him. I just wanted him to bring up my birthday.

"Because your my best friend." Shawn replied. Right, I am just his best friend.

"Will it make you happy if I came along?" I asked. He nodded excitedly.

"Okay, I'll come along I guess?" He jumped up and down and hugged me.

"Thank you Jackie!" He pulled away and we continued to walk.

"Anything for you." I still had a smile on my face but in the inside I was broken.

It was Saturday morning, and this whole week, Shawn hasn't brought up my birthday. Not even once. Heartbroken was an understatement.

I heard knocking from my door. "Come in!" I yelled.

The door opened to reveal my parents holding up a cake with the candles lit.

"Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Jacklyn, happy birthday to you." They sang.

"Thank you so much." I gave them a big hug then blew out my candles.
