QUESTION:
What is a backup slot/love interest/faceclaim? What are they for?ANSWER:
So, when you apply to an apply fic, you're applying for a specific slot. That's your main slot. Your backup slot is a slot you want your character to be considered for if something comes up where the author wants to accept your form but can't/won't accept it for your main slot.A general rule of thumb for me is that your backup slot should either be close in age to your main slot or close in personality.
Now, I'll admit, backup slot are kind of pointless, especially when you're catering your character towards your main slot and they probably won't work for any other slot. However, I've had an instance with one of my apply fics where I got two really good forms for the same slot. I accepted one for that slot, and accepted the other for their backup which happened to be similar in personality to their main slot (and I could change the ages around for the slots and have everything work out fine). That's the main reason apply fic authors have you choose a backup slot.
Now, a backup love interest is along the same lines. In the apply fics where they have love interests (because not all of them do), you're applying for a specific love interest. That's your main love interest. Your backup love interest is a love interest you want for your character if something comes up where the author wants to accept your form but can't/won't accept it for your main love interest.
A backup faceclaim is the same thing (and I'm not going to reiterate everything a third time). However, an author will use your backup faceclaim if they feel it fits your character better than your main faceclaim. That's why it's always good to choose a backup faceclaim you feel fits your character instead of just randomly slapping one on there. - admin aj
