What is a fancafe? How does a fancafe work?

ANSWER:
So, I actually had to look up the background for this but it makes sense.

Originally, a fancafe (to the best of my knowledge) is where fans of different (actual) idol groups talk to each other and whatnot. Obviously, the term has been adjusted for apply fics. That makes a lot of sense, considering how most apply fics create fictional idol groups.

In an apply fic, a fancafe is a bit different. The fancafe is generally where the author posts form counts (how many forms have been submitted for which slots, both main and backup generally), which slots are open and which are closed, what faceclaims are taken (and occasionally a faceclaim count, which tells you what faceclaims have been submitted, both main and backup generally), a deadline for when forms must be submitted (if there is one, not all apply fics have deadlines), along with general updates relating to the apply fic.

The fancafe is one of the most useful places for an applicant in an apply fic (if the author keeps it updated, a not-updated fancafe is more or less useless). A fancafe lets you keep track of which slots you can go for, how much competition you might have, etc etc. Authors will also post anything helpful in there. I know I'll always post little things about the fic or rant about some apply fic bullshit that got on my nerves that I want any applicants not to do or to generally remind people there's a deadline.

Never feel bad for commenting on a fancafe and asking if it's updated (unless it's obvious the author has updated it recently). It shows you're trying to stay on top of the apply fic, which is a good sign.

ALSO, fancafes in apply fics can be called different things! In admin Taylor's apply fic, The Shadows, she calls the fancafe the "mission list," as the fic is about assassins (and girl groups). However, her mission list serves the same purpose as a fancafe in a general apply fic. Hope that helps! -admin aj
