Dan checked his phone once again as Chris was getting dressed in his bathroom.

He had a sneaking suspicion that Lion would cancel on him, but he had some faith that things would go alright. He knew his ex would be there and he wouldn't feel comfortable being there without Lion. He wondered what Lion would wear, if he would be able to recognize them, or if they were just as endearing in person as through text.

Dan did have a crush, an intangible crush. He'd had it for a year now, but it always felt untouchable, as if Lion was too good to be true. The fact that Lion never wanted to reveal their identity made it all the more difficult to trust. He had told Lion things he'd never reveal to anyone, he felt like himself when talking to Lion.

Sure Dan had dated Rachel on and off while having a crush on the anonymous pen pal, but she was always second best to him. She was a lot like Ryan and Mark with a bit of a mean streak that Dan always felt uncomfortable about. Their last argument was what ended them and after tonight Dan was planning on asking Lion out on a date and staying just friends with Rachel.

Dan threw on his black velvet jacket and straightened out his red and silver detailed vest underneath. He pulled on his silver detailed half-mask resembling a bear and turned around to see Chris at the door.

"Ready Pikachu?" Dan laughed.

Chris was wearing a Pikachu print sweater with a tail and a Pikachu hat.

"Sure thing your majesty, prince Daniel." Chris bowed, dramatically.

Dan rolled his eyes.

Phil stood behind the closed doors leading to the venue room of the Halloween dance. The music blasted and Phil nervously checked the time on his phone, setting an alarm for when his mother and father would be home from their date night.

"Okay Peej, I have until midnight before we have to leave. You can stay over, but if my parents ask just tell them we were at my house playing video games all day. I'm supposed to be grounded."

Pj nodded in understanding, "right well im going to go on ahead so people won't get suspicious seeing us arrive together. You're the only person I'm around 24/7 they'd know right away."

Phil nodded in agreement and pj opened the door a crack and walked through. Phil waited a few minutes before steadying his nervous breath and opening the large doors. The venue was huge and a disco ball hung on the ceiling, illumination everyone's bodies with colour.

"Right. You can do this Philly just don't trip down the stairs and break your neck in front of the entire school." Phil muttered to himself.

He took another deep breath and began walking down the large set of stairs just as the music switched and a Melanie Martinez cover of "toxic" started playing. His eyes widened as he noticed nearly everyone's eyes on him, but he still didn't see Dan. He reached the bottom step, stumbling a little, but catching himself. He noticed Pj by the punch giving him an encouraging two thumbs up.

Phil squeezed his way between the couples slow dancing and made it to the middle of the dance floor, just under the disco ball. No sign of Dan yet.

He waited awkwardly as the slow-dancing finished and the music picked up again. He felt a tap on his shoulder and slowly turned around.

"Lion?"

Phil immediately became very aware that Dan now knew what he looked like. Was he disappointed? Did he want a thin blonde with a perfect hourglass figure like Rachel?

"Hi Dan," Phil swallowed back his nerves.

Dan smiled and glanced over his shoulder.

Phil followed his gaze to see Dan's friends talking with the cheerleaders.
