The next day saying that I was a zombie was huge understatement. I was in a worse state than a zombie. If such a thing even existed. I dragged my feet through the hallways and got weird looks from the students, but when have I ever cared.
“Sam, wait up!” I heard Rona yell behind me.
“Jesus Christ! What the hell do you want now? Do you take pride in annoying be every minute of every sing day? I’m sick of it. Go find someone else to annoy.” I snapped at her.
“Jeez, sorry. What crawled up your ass and died?” I glared at her and she held her hands up in defense. “Okay, I get it. How about we go to the cafeteria. They’re playing ‘what’s in the meat?’”
I narrowed my eyes at her. “The one with the mystery meat?” she nodded. “No thank you. I’ve hear they put cow’s guts in there. I think I’ll pass.”
“Suit yourself. I want to know whose winning.” She took a step back. “Try to calm down. You’re scaring people just by being all mopey.”
“Then it’s working.” I bit back. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?”
She waved me off but ran towards the cafeteria. I walked further down the hallway and walked over to the tree where I sit when I want to be alone, or just want a breeze and fresh air. Too bad my fantasy didn’t last long as Drew was coming up to me. I groaned and dropped my head. What did I do to deserve this? I did good to the world, most times. I wouldn’t stand for this crappy treatment.
“Hey Samantha, can I join you?” he smiled down at me.
I looked to the spot next to me and then back up at him. He shrugged and sat down anyway. Wow, forward much?
“I’ve seen that you looked totally out of it today.” What an excellent conversation starter. Really? Couldn’t he think of anything else?
“What of it?”
“You’ve been sending of weird vibes that’s got a lot of people asking questions.”
“Tell them I say that they can go tell it to someone who gives two shits.” I looked at him so that he could see the glare I was giving him.
“A bit harsh, don’t you think? Would you care to tell me what happened?” he tilted his head and dammit, did it make him even cuter.
“What makes you think that something happened?” I raised an eyebrow.
“People don’t end up coming to school like that just because they missed out on sleep. I know something happened. My aunt had that look on her face when my uncle died.” He looked away before looking to the ground.
I started playing with the grass and twirled it around my fingers. “My mom kicked my dad out last night. I guess I was expecting it, but I never thought that it just all fall apart like that.”
“Nothing ever happens the way you expected it to.” he said softly. “I’m sorry to hear about that though. I’m sure you’ll get through it all just fine.”
“Thanks though. And as I said, it was bound to happen sooner or later.” I looked down at the ground again and focused my eyes on the grass.
“Samantha, about yesterday, I’m sorry about Hilary. She can be a bit of a bitch.”
