When I woke up the sun was already high in the sky. I stretched before getting out of bed and making my way to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and went back to the room to pull on a pair of sweats.
“Morning aunt Pearl.” I said as I said down at the breakfast table. “Where’s Brad?”
“Morning Kai. Brad’s out back taking an early morning swim.” She smiled at me. “He’s aiming for the gold.”
“I already have the gold mom.” Brad said walking in soaked from head to toe. He shook his head and I saw some of the water drip down onto the carpet.
“Go dry yourself off outside. You’re wetting my carpet.” Aunt Pearl scolded him.
“Yes madam.” He replied bored and went back outside.
“Teenagers. What can you do?” she shrugged and laughed. I then figured out that it was supposed to be a joke so I laughed along. Even though I didn’t get it.
After finishing my breakfast, I excused myself from the table and joined Brad outside at the edge of the pool.
“Hey Brad.” I said as I approached him.
“Hey short stuff.” He said without looking. Even though Brad was younger than me, he had always been taller. I couldn’t help but envy him for it. “You all settled in?”
“For now yea. I’m just waiting for my other stuff to arrive.” I looked off into the distance.
The view was pretty great out here. I swiftly gazed over the entire are. It was difficult to believe that all this was made by man. I wondered what it would look like at night.
“This is a pretty good place to come if you want to think.” Brad said interrupting my thoughts. I furrowed my brows wondering why a person would sit at the edge of a pool to think. “But up there is a better spot.”
I turned my head to where he pointed. It was a little balcony that had a ladder and apparently no way to get to from the inside of the house. It seemed quite private and peaceful. I thought that I would maybe use that spot a lot. I still had to get used to the fact that I wasn’t at home anymore. Never mind the fact that my girlfriend –man was it weird calling her that- was back home. I was alone in a new town where the only people I knew were these few family members. I was never good at making friends that’s why I only had two.
“Are you listening?” brad snapped his fingers in front of me. “you seem a bit out of it.”
“Sorry. I have a lot on my mind. Just trying to process everything.”
“We’ll go to a club tonight. Meet some girls and get your mind of things.” He winked at me.
“I have a girlfriend.” I admitted. “And aren’t you too young to go to clubs?”
“I know a guy.” He smirked then looked away.
I could tell that brad was that ‘love and leave ‘em’ kind of guy. I wonder how many girls he had ‘met’ so far.
“You know many people around here?” we both knew what I was hinting at.
“Maybe. Why?” he raised an eyebrow. “You can’t rat me out. They’ve got nothing on me.”
