“I’ve got to get going. Don’t want to be late on my first day.” I said snatching a piece of toast and grabbing my bag.
“Good luck today Kai.” Aunt Pearl said as she filled her bowl with some muesli. “Are you sure you don’t want me to take you?”
“Yea, I’m sure. I’ll take the bus.” I bit down on the toast. “It’s not a big deal. Well, I’ve really got to go now. See you later.”
“Enjoy your day sweetie.” She smiled up at me and I smiled back for a second before opening the door and stepping outside. Thank goodness I decided to take the bus to the campus a few days ago. At least I knew the route now.
The bus ride wasn’t too bad. There were people talking here and there, complaining about how bad their weekend was our how their children didn’t want to go on that fishing trip with them. I shook my head as I put my iPod’s earphones into my ears. I put my music on full volume and tapped my feet to the beat. I felt my phone buzz in my pocket, indicating that I got a message, and pulled it out to read what it said.
Good luck Kai. Rock it and show them what you’re made of. I’ll be routing for you. -love you.
I smiled as I re-read it. I knew she wasn’t expecting a reply but I replied anyway. Thanks. Love you too.
I put my phone back into my pocket and relaxed back into my seat. Brad already asked me this morning if I was nervous about starting my first day at university. I was, of course I was. Any normal person would be. I just wanted to keep all the nervousness inside and try to let others see it. I didn’t think that it would do good to show up on the first day and get a reputation of a pussy so early into the year.
The bus came to a stop not too far from the university and I got up and got off. I gripped the strap of my bag a bit tighter and walked the few meters to the front doors.
As I entered the building I was immediately taken aback at how lively the place was. This was nothing like high school. It seemed like people actually wanted to be here. I guessed that I could classify this as a good start.
I lowered the volume on my iPod and took on earphone out. I accidently knocked into someone causing their books to fall.
“I’m so sorry. I wasn’t looking.” I bent down to pick the stuff up.
“It’s okay. It happens all the time. Literally.” I gave the books back to a boy who I saw wasn’t too different from what I was like at the beginning of high school. “I’m Timothy Carlson the third.”
He stuck out his hand and I shook it. “I’m Kai.”
“Just Kai?’ he raised an eyebrow.
“Yea. We’ll leave everything at a need to know basis okay?” He nodded at me.
“Is this your first day?”
“Yea. You?” I jerked my head in his direction.
“Same but I used to hang out here a lot during my senior year. So I’m basically a second year taking the first year’s classes.” He shrugged.
