I heard the school bell ring and I rushed to my first class. Why did I have to be late now? It was the second last day of school. This day was not starting out so well.
The halls were already clear except for a few students who were regular detention goers. I ignored them and ran on down the hall to the class. It was just my luck that this class was the furthest one away from my locker and everything else as well. I couldn’t remember a time where I wasn’t late. If ever there was a day where I was early, well that would have been a big surprise. Even to me.
I ran into someone but caught myself before I could fall down. I definitely hated today. This was not how I wanted to end the school year. Why did I even bother coming to school?
“Kai, so this is how you want to end off your school year?” Ms. Morris, that damn hall monitor said tapping her foot on the ground and folding her arms across her chest.
Seriously? Up till my last day this woman still wanted to torture me? What was her problem? Didn’t she have other things to do? There were other students in this school. I wasn’t the only one. No wonder she wasn’t married. Who on earth would ever want to be married to that?
“You seem to come late every Thursday.”
“Well you stopping me every Thursday is not making me any earlier.” I spat at her.
“You better watch your tongue young man.”
“What are you going to do? Give me a detention.” I scoffed. “School rules state that a teacher can’t give detention to the seniors during the last week of school.”
“The person who came up with that rule was a stupid know it all and an old fool with nothing better to do than make the lives of teachers that much difficult. They should be burned.”
“Thank you very much for that Ms. Morris.” Mr. Ray, the school principle said stepping up from behind her.
She turned around in surprise and gasped at the sight before her. “Mr. Ray. I had no idea you were standing over there.”
“Quite sneaky for an old fool even if I say so myself.” He said running his fingers through his greyed hair. “Now why were you tormenting this young boy? He has a class to get to.”
“he was running in the hall sir. And he was late.”
“He said it to you as well. Need I repeat? You stopping him would not make him any earlier.” He turned to me and winked. I couldn’t hide the forming smile.
“Are you taking a lowly student’s side?” she asked baffled.
“No. I’m not. I’m simply disagreeing with the one who is in the wrong.” Nice way of going against a person. Why did I always think this man was boring? “Go ahead to class my boy. You’ve already missed out on most of it.”
I nodded and thanked him before running off to class. When I got to class I smiled at Sam and took my seat beside Rona. The teacher was reading some book in a corner and the rest of the class was talking the period away. I shrugged and looked over to my friends. Who would want to miss this? This was the best part of the day. When you were free to talk to whomever and do whatever you wanted. I would have this over any classes any time, any day of the week.
