~Kai~

I was sitting in the cafeteria picking at my food. I didn’t really feel like eating. To be honest, I haven’t been eating properly since that day back at Sam’s house. I should never have told her. Our friendship was ruined before the words came out, but that didn’t make the situation any different. That’s why secrets were supposed to remain what they were... a secret.

“Dude, are you still moping about what happened?” Rona asked sitting down next to me. She picked up her apple and handed it to me but I shook my head no. “She’ll get over it. Just give it time. Best friends fight all the time.”

That was right. Rona was still in the dark about my feelings and the fact that I told Sam.

I peered up at her and gave her a death glare. “What’s it to you?”

“Seriously? Kai, it’s been almost two months. You’re worse than a girl who just got dumped.”

“I don’t want to be compared to a girl.” I pouted.

“Then stop acting like one.” She picked up her pudding cup and stuck a spoon in it. “Hey, you have something sticking out of your bag.”

Before I could register what she said, she had already pulled the envelope out and was currently waving it in my face. My eyes widened and I reached for it only for her to stretch her arm even further behind her.

“Give that back Rona.” I said reaching for it.

“What is it?” She turned her back towards me and gasped as she looked down at the envelope.

“It’s none of your business.” I was a bit too late. She had already opened it.

“It’s you acceptance letter.” I rolled my eyes. I knew that. She didn’t need to go pointing it out for me. “Kai, that’s great. You’re going to Stanford.”

“I know. Now I just need to pray for graduation to get here sooner so that I can get the hell out of here.” I said chewing awkwardly on a tater tot.

“Why do you want to leave so bad?”

“I don’t want to stay here any longer. It’s best if I just left. I’ve decided to leave the week after graduation. That way Sam wouldn’t have to see my face.”

“Have you even told her that you got accepted? That you’re leaving?”

“No. and I don’t want her to know. I’ve given her enough trouble as it is.” I said sighing.

“Kai that unfair.” She looked at me with a scowl on her face. “She’s your friend. She deserves to know.”

“She deserves good people around her who she can trust.” I retorted. “Clearly we weren’t able to fit the requirements.”

“Everyone makes mistakes.” She said softly, looking down with what seemed like guilt.

“And we didn’t think before we made ours.” I stood up and picked my tray up from the table. “Now we have to bear the consequences.”

“Kai!” she yelled after me.

Even though she called my name a few times again, I just walked away faster. I couldn’t face her, not like this. I remembered the time when Sam called after me and I stood outside her door, tempted to go back in, but instead I ran and didn’t stop till I got home. The look on her face made me want to turn around but I just couldn’t risk it. Hurting her was the worst thing I could ever do and if I could avoid it, I would. I wouldn’t ever want to put her in that position ever again.
