Iris hadn't had the fortune to be surprised at what the lawn behind Moon Dormitory looked like. Avalon's fondness for extremity already gave her the idea of what she'll be facing.
The grass stood almost at her waist. Her entire vision was engulfed by green. At where she stood, she could spot a portion of the lawn where it looked like the previous students who had been given the same punishment had started their weeding out.
She rolled her sleeves up and tied her hair into a ponytail. She began to work.
The vibrant pink of the scissor stood out in contrast to the color of the weed. It annoyed her. With every snip of the scissor, the number of weeds that fell was enough to be counted on all her fingers.
This was going to take a while.
As the hours flew by and the sun was high up on the sky, Iris never stopped. Even when the glare of the sun hurt her skin, she paid it no heed. Where her skin itched, she ignored it. Even when a voice in her mind told her to stop because of the sheer madness of the task, she just snapped her fingers at the scissor and cut twice the amount of weed.
Iris also turned a blind eye when the place began to fill up with curious students. It must be lunch time already.
"It's inevitable, you're gonna get expelled!" Someone called to her. She let it pass through her other ear.
"No one's ever done this task!"
She felt her lips quirked up as a thought occurred to her. How ironic it was that someone as invisible as her was now probably in the minds of almost all the students in the school. Life really was the most challenging opponent.
A shadow fell on top of her, "You're really doing it."
She recognized the voice as Ares'. It was obvious what she was doing, so she kept silent and saved energy.
"Why are you doing it?"
Without looking up, she said, "The reason why I'm doing it."
"Not getting expelled," He said, voicing out her answer. "I told you before, this is fucking useless. You're just wasting precious energy."
"I've already heard that before. Do you see me stopping?" She said, feeling an edge creep into her voice. "So save your precious energy and leave me be."
He squatted beside her and obstructed her view with his face, surprising her with the sudden proximity. His green eyes were bright as he studied her face, "So you do get annoyed."
She ignored that and continued cutting. She was close to being but his words put a stop to that. This absurd task must be taking its toll on her for her to slip out of composure.
Ares left her after that with not another word.
When lunch time ended and all the students dispersed for their classes, Iris was once again surrounded by the sound of her own breathing and the snip of the scissors. She felt her body complaining by now. She noticed the red welts on her skin at where mosquitos had bitten it. She was also growing dizzy at the heat.
She stood up and went to her bag. She drank her water and splashed her face a bit with it, almost crying out at the heavenly sensation of it. Then she runmaged through her bag to look for snacks. Iris always kept a couple of granola bars as a snack during her practices and this time it proved to be handy as well. Good thing old habits die hard, for she also found a spare T-shirt.
